Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Josiah D. Coleman

I head the Mississippi Law Journal’s “BriefServ.” Each Sunday, I send our paying subscribers a Newsletter which consists of all of the briefs that the Mississippi Supreme Court and Court of Appeals opinions handed down that week. I assign our Staff Editors an opinion to brief after they are handed down. Once I receive the briefs, I edit each to ensure the Courts’ points are included and correct, while adhering to our standard Newsletter format. Each week, there are roughly 5-15 cases handed down from the Courts combined.

During my five-week internship with the Honorable Justice Coleman, I researched and drafted many items for Justice Coleman. I wrote a dissent, special concurrence, panel memorandum recommendation, box opinion recommendation, and an oral argument recommendation. The issues I researched include summary judgment, Rule 30(b)(6) deposition testimony, sufficiency of evidence, standing, admissibility of evidence, bar matters, and constitutional issues such as free speech and facial challenges.

I returned to intern for the Criminal Appeals division of the Attorney General’s Office this summer. I researched various issues and then wrote memoranda for the attorneys. The issues I researched include sufficiency of evidence, weight of evidence, admissibility of evidence, jury instructions, invocation of right to counsel, Miller factors, and indictment requirements.

Analyzed coach’s questions and actions by looking at the NCAA bylaws and determining whether an action would be or was permitted under the rules. Created prospective student profiles on compliance databases to save their information received from official and unofficial visits.Called the individuals listed on the student athletes’ complimentary ticket lists to ensure there was nothing of value exchanged for the tickets that would affect the athlete’s amateurism.Worked the gate at basketball games to admit those on the complimentary ticket list and the prospective athletes visiting. Briefed other schools’ violations.

I interned for the Criminal Appeals division of the Attorney General’s Office. I researched issues including constructive possession, expert testimony, ineffective assistance of counsel, search and seizure, and the proper procedure for the identification and measurement of drugs. I also helped a couple of attorneys prepare for their oral arguments in front of the Mississippi Court of Appeals.

Drafted documents including a recommendation for a commutation of sentence petition, reply to a complaint, and response to a Motion 2255.Drafted research memoranda on issues such as ransomware, cell phone tower data, and the admissibility of prior bad acts. Observed court proceedings such as revocation hearings, change of plea hearings, detention hearings, social security hearings, and initial appearances and sentencings.
