PROGRAM WORK - Deputy Systems Engineer for Level 1 Programhttps://www.ll.mit.edu/news/lincoln-laboratory-designing-payload-integrate-japanese-satellitesRESEARCHMy research focuses on how we can use existing components on spacecraft to detect and characterize the high-energy space radiation environment. Space is a hazardous place for spacecraft, leading to many documented spacecraft anomalies; therefore, it is important to characterize and understand the environment. Imagers are common to many spacecraft (science imagers, star trackers, etc.) and have a strong response to high-energy radiation. We are developing a technique to extract radiation information from imagers, comparing with simulations of the imagers in Geant4, to quantify the high-energy environment. GEO communications satellites offer the unique advantage that there are large databases from decades of housekeeping telemetry, which is rarely mined for scientific purposes. My masters research leveraged this large pool of data to examine the effects of space weather on spacecraft. This included statistical analyses of anomalies in relation to the environment, the study of radiation effects on materials, and trend identification in telemetry. All of these are combined to yield a comprehensive study of the environmental effects on spacecraft in order to detect, prevent and predict on-board anomalies and mitigate other risks.Additionally, I have research interests and experience in satellite system design, spacecraft operations, satellite constellations, program management, observational astronomy, and optics.
