I seek employment as a grant writer/office administrator for an organization that combines science-based evidence with grassroots involvement of the community to build sustainable solutions to land and water use issues in the Rocky Mountain West. Managing students in a classroom as a teacher helped prepare me to manage an office. After teaching for more than a decade, I worked as an office manager and grant writer for a Native American tribe before returning to teaching. Most recently, I found a way to continue writing grants for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe as well as tutoring college students. As a current member of a regional leadership council for an Eastern Washington and North Idaho community foundation, I have seen the effectiveness of community-led grant programs. Life experience does not always mean lessons learned. There are always more lessons to learn. Some that have successfully guided me thus far are listed below:• People are more important than paper• Everyone wants to know they are valued and doing good work• Staff need clear expectations and constructive modeling from supervisors• Time management and prioritization of tasks are paramount• Schedules are great, but are made to be changed• Flexibility, perseverance, and dependability are highly valued character traits• Never underestimate the power of scratch-made food to bring people togetherA life of striving has led to greater acceptance. The long view comes into focus. Assumptions are more easily held in check, good will and graciousness are in greater supply. Time is short; there is work to do. I offer my writing and office skills so you and your organization can fulfill an unmet need to improve the quality of life and sustainability for the community.
