About Ryan Barton
I currently work as a Software Engineer at Tenstorrent Inc. (on the Customer Success team), while also remaining affiliated with joint labs at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and RIKEN (under the leadership of Toshio Endo and Satoshi Matsuoka, respectively). In both endeavors, I develop software for High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. I am extremely passionate about computational science research, optimizing code, tinkering with compilers, understanding the intricacies of C++ libraries, and watching the two behemoths of HPC and AI collide. The challenges and innovations they will bring are beyond human imagination, and that's too cool of a concept to pass up.For lower-performing systems (they deserve love too!), I enjoy building entertainment projects related to music or nifty tools to increase productivity. For fun, I produce music in my home studio (or, as some might say, "tickle the ivories"). For now, Tokyo is my home—with its hustling and bustling maze of streets and the tens of thousands of restaurants and cafes that dot them. On the other side of the Pacific, I enjoy winding through the forests and waterways of Washington, my home state—preferably with a rain jacket and a craft latte. Whether here or there, I like to stay curious and inspired by the neatest of things.

Software Engineer
CurrentI belong to the HPC and Product Engineering arms of the Customer Success team, involved in writing & optimizing performant kernels, as well as maxing out the utilization of Tenstorrent's specialized Tensix core hardware. Two open-source software stacks are available to customers of the Grayskull and Wormhole cards on offer: -----AI-----TT-BUDA: enables immediate and fast execution of AI models, whether those from popular communities such as Hugging Face, or those custom built for enterprise. Its flexible design operates seamlessly on a wide variety of training, inference, evaluation, and benchmarking tasks, while also future proofed to support wildly new innovative models.------------Non-AI------------TT-METALIUM: exposes the hardware's rich feature set at the "bare metal" level, equipping developers and researchers alike with an API for their workloads in the high performance domain. It aims to make further strides possible in fields such as physics, meteorology, astronomy, medicine, and finance. --------------------Tenstorrent is leading the charge in next-generation AI & HPC computing systems. We aim to make applications of the future more powerful, efficient, and scalable, by combining forces of the RISC-V microarchitecture and distinctive approaches to graph compute and data flow hardware design.
App Localizer, Android & Ios Development Contributor
CurrentI initiated localization and currently maintain the Japanese version of the Musikraken MIDI Construction Kit app, originally built for English and German users. The debut version was released in March 2023, and in the following months we observed increased downloads from the Japanese market. • Consulting native Japanese MIDI documentation for a proper UI and set of connectivity instructions.• Managing vocabulary lookup tables and oversee XML sections of code base to maintain a satisfying user experience.• Actively planning a 2023-2024 marketing campaign targeting Japanese music enthusiasts.• Collaborating with lead developer on functionality improvements (eg. Apple Airpods, Pencil).• Exploring integration of ChatGPT-like LLVM API with Musikraken.
Lead Developer, Research Assistant
Under supervision from Satoshi Matsuoka's lab, I developed BITFLEX, a C++ floating-point emulation toolchain designed for HPC developers and users. It aims to provide a fine-grained means of varying precision and tracking floating-point errors (a performance versus accuracy trade-off analysis), particularly for low-precision matrix computations.• Enhanced the MPREAL C++ wrapper and incorporated the Serialbox 2 API with an FP_BITFLEX variable type, allowing fine‑grained custom IEEE floating‑point emulation for HPC and AI hardware.• Integrated Excel‑based visualizations, including heatmaps and scatterplots, to showcase round‑off error variations with respect to user precision and tolerance.• Identified previously undetected machine epsilon side‑effects within the Gauss‑Seidel method.• Attained 0% theoretical performance degradation in Conjugate Gradient iterations for precisions ≥ 40‑bits, and 66.67% for an FP_BITFLEX 19‑bit format inspired by Nvidia’s TF32.
English Language Coversation Instructor
I took on the role of leading English lessons in various formats, including one-on-one sessions, group classes, and online lessons through Skype and Zoom. These lessons spanned several locations including Matsudo, Katsushika, Kiba, Monzen-Nakacho, Nihombashi, and Ueno. • Catered to diverse age groups: from children (3 yrs) to seniors (mid-80s).• Emphasized real-world conversational practice for adults, focusing on current events and mutual interests.• Targeted grammar and pronunciation for younger students aligning with primary education needs.• Employed creative instructional methods: used homemade props and interactive games.• Introduced color-linked world map for geography recall and logic dice games for probability skills.• Tailored teaching strategies to individual student goals: Technical English for civil engineering and architectural surveying. Preparation for work holidays in Australia. Weekly timed Eiken practice sessions. Assisted Tokyo University PhDs and Postdocs in manuscript drafting. Edited speeches on public service and SDGs.
Tokyo Tech-Aist Open Innovation Lab Research Assistant
In collaboration with researchers from AIST-Tokyo Tech Real World Big-Data Computation Open Innovation Laboratory (RWBC-OIL) (Tokyo, Japan) and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Barcelona, Spain), I contributed to the open‑source MCXX compiler with ongoing work on a custom OpenMP pragma for non‑deterministic applications.• Added functionality via a unique handler allowing users to intercept arithmetic instructions at code block granularity.• Identified dependency issues between GCC and OpenMP v5.0, and strategized how to rectify them on future releases.• Proposed this ongoing contribution as a potential extension to OpenMP.
Educational Tour Coordinator & Office Tech (Etc Seattle Branch)
My role at ETC Seattle (a subsidiary of Nissin Travel, Inc.) was to arrange and curate special tours for Japanese students of various ages as well as corporate entities. Major project areas included downtown Seattle WA and Portland OR, the University of Washington (Seattle campus), high schools across several school districts for exchange programs, Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon, and Nike.• Assumed significant responsibility of office technology setup, email and SNS support, and general maintenance.• Constructed diverse team of English teachers through extensive rounds of hiring and led in the design of custom curricula, ranging from middle school to undergraduate university.• Reinforced knowledge of business Japanese through frequent contact with head Japanese tour agencies.Examples: JTB, H.I.S., and Tobu Top Tours.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
For this project I assisted UW meterology and cloud physics professor Dr. Robert Wood by developing an OOP Java application to better classify clouds using satellite imagery data.• Ported and refined multi‑GB NetCDF data, highlighting gaps in meteorological coverage over the SE Pacific Ocean.• Implemented a data processing pipeline using WEKA for supervised machine learning.• Delivered an atmospheric contour map visualization for clear cloud type representation.
Web Development In-Test
I assisted the design and implementation of the company's PHP backend tests for a database of utility consumption and costs belonging to building tenants in the Pacific Northwest.• Clients included shopping mall retailers, Starbucks establishments, and large apartment complexes.• Monitored integrity of database by ensuring proper data retrieval from a Google Device‑to‑SMS service.• Assisted deployment of NoWire edge devices for WiFi usage capture, saving users hundreds of dollars over a typical period of use as compared to traditional wired methods.
