Continued on Always. On Tampax, led team across Leo Burnett Chicago and Leo Burnett Milan to create and execute the brand’s first global campaign: “Outsmart Mother Nature” which was very successful in North America and Western Europe.Worked on team that drove concept development all the way through market launch/activation plan for first super-premium product extension, Tampax Radiant. P&G Tampax: NA Account Director P&G Always: NA Brand Agency Leader (BAL)Responsibility on Always increases, become Brand Agency Leader (BAL) for the North American region, working as part of a global network of Burnetters and partner agencies at offices in seven different regions of the world. While the Have a Happy Period Campaign was controversial in some ways, during my nine years on the brand, NA Always share grew by 10 points. Agency evaluation above a 4.5 (on a 5.0 scale) for 8 of the 9 years I led the business. Took on responsibility for NA Tampax as well and commercialized first ever cross-brand cause marketing initiative for Always and Tampax. The Protecting Futures Program provided feminine protection so girls in Africa don’t have to miss school due to lack of protection during their periods. Worked on team that drove concept development all the way through market launch/activation plan for first super-premium product extension, called Tampax Radiant. This won 45 creative awards including a Cannes Lion, making Tampax the most awarded account in the Leo Burnett Worldwide network in 2009.
Vp, Account Director
P&G AlwaysI helped transition the North American arm of this global account from Lintas New York to Leo Burnett Chicago to help consolidate all of P&G's femcare brands into one agency worldwide. And worked as part of a global network on the brand for the next nine years. The Leo Burnett Chicago team I worked with created the "Have a Happy Period" campaign which started in North America, but ultimately traveled around the world. Bob Garfield named the campaign to his "Top 10 Campaigns of 2005" list, and while controversial, as you can imagine it garnered lots of publicity. And resulting strong business results backed it up.
Vp, Account Supervisor
United States Postal ServiceThis was my first experience managing an integrated communications campaign and partner agencies on a large-scale, with over nine different agencies across all disciplines and target audiences in the mix. Together, we launched a new campaign "Brought to You By the United States Postal Service" which tried establish the role that the USPS plays in American society, going beyond delivering packages and letters, to bring consumers and businesses the intangible benefits of fulfillment, personal connection and success. When the anthrax-in-letters-scare happened, the tagline took on an entirely different meaning, and we had to quickly shift gears. Picked up some useful skills in crisis management communications during this time.
Account Supervisor
Morgan StanleyWorked on global branding initiative around the merger of Morgan Stanley with Dean Witter and then to communicate the name change to Morgan Stanley. In 2001, we created the "Well Connected" campaign, targeting individual investors and asset-management groups. Named "Top Financial Services Campaign" that year by Financial Services Marketing Magazine. In 2002, Morgan Stanley consolidated their marketing efforts -- individual investors, asset-management, and institutional securities -- with Leo Burnett, with the campaign "One Client at a Time."
Account Supervisor
Amtrak & University of Chicago Graduate School of BusinessWas one of the first employees at legendary New York agency Ammirati Puris Lintas' (now Lowe) foray into the Chicago marketplace. Loved the entrepreneurial spirit and had two great but diverse clients: The University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business and Amtrak. For the University of Chicago, we created a campaign that leveraged the style and POV of The Economist and that publication played a big role in the media plan for this campaign. For Amtrak, we marketed their long-distance train travel services. The fight for funding was hard at a time when the sexy Acela train service was launching on the East Coast. But trying to bring long-distance train travel more popular in the U.S. is a great mission and I was proud to be a part of it.
Account Executive
Nortel (B-to-B) & PageNetPicked up some business-to-business marketing experience here working on big telecom company Nortel. Also showing my age, but worked for a Dallas-based company called PageNet, that was in the ... you guessed it ... pager business, back when that was a big business. Worked out of the client-offices in Dallas three days a week so that we could foster better client collaboration, with frequent calls back to the team in Chicago.
Brand Communications Manager
A great job to have right out of grad school. Got a wide variety of experiences, from working with ad agency Fallon on a brand advertising campaign -- a corporate name change campaign to communicate change from Illinois Bell to Ameritech. Also worked with Fallon on an employee communications program as part of the name change. I remember our CEO walking by my cube and letting me know that he "hated those employee posters" that I'd worked on. A highlight. Also part of small team that led the charge to create and launch Ameritech's first dot com website.
Summer Intern
(Was Sara Lee Corporate Headquarters at the time). The IMC program offered summer internships, and I was lucky enough to land the one at Sara Lee Corporate Headquarters (at the time) in Chicago. Great mix of employee communications and investor relations experience, along with free Sara Lee pound cake!
Summer Internship
Since 1886, the MGEX has been the principal market for hard red spring wheat, first as a cash market, then futures and options. As a descendent of North Dakota farmers who grew and still grow said wheat, it was pretty cool to work in a place they'd likely never seen, but one which had helped them earn a living. I wrote and designed internal and external marketing materials and assisted with preparation for board meetings.
Summer Internship, Alumni Relations
Took some summer school classes and worked here, provided some "arms and legs" in planning alumni events and also writing blurbs for the alumni newsletter. Also wrote some endowment brochure copy, which was great because it allowed me to learn about some really successful people who were from North Dakota (primarily) and how they got that way.
Retail Sales Associate
Summer job. I didn't have a natural gift for retail, but my team members were patient and kind and helped teach me the ropes. One of my co-workers was a naturally-gifted merchandiser and I learned a ton just from watching her.
