I’m the founder and chairman of Stiff, an Ottawa-based international communications agency established in 1988. I’ve been writing professionally for over 40 years, and have served in various roles as an educator, screenwriter, filmmaker, speechwriter, author of narrative history and fiction, lecturer and broadcaster in Canada and abroad.Recently, I partnered with Major-General (Retired) David Fraser to write Operation Medusa: The Furious Battle That Saved Afghanistan from the Taliban. Operation Medusa was a Canadian-led offensive during the second Battle of Panjwayi of the war in Afghanistan. It was the largest and bloodiest Canadian combat operation since the Second World War and the most significant land battle ever undertaken by NATO. The book tells a remarkable true story of imminent threat, impossible odds and unexpected courage. Operation Medusa is available for purchase as of May 8, 2018. I’m also the author of Every Popish Person: The Story of Roman Catholicism in Nova Scotia and the Church of Halifax, and A Hundred Years on a Handshake: The Lively History of M. Sullivan & Son Limited 1914–2014. In addition to writing these books, I’ve crafted speeches and presentations for a wide variety of public and private officials, including six prime ministers, many Fortune 1000 CEOs and, at one point, Pope John Paul II. Many decades ago I earned a BA in English literature from Carleton University, which is when I fell in love with language and found my niche in the arena of rhetoric and public communication. Since then my consistent goal has been simply to tell the truth brilliantly.
