Personal StatementFrom 2021-2023, I pursued biomedical engineering. However, the term “pursue” can be used lightly. I went to all my classes and got decent grades but at the end of the day, I absolutely hated what I was “pursuing.” When deciding what I wanted to do in college, 17-year-old me was driven by the concept of academic validation. The idea of being “smart” consumed my life and I chose my college major based on the fact that it was extremely challenging. Being so hardworking, I found it easy to apply myself to most concepts and I felt like I had a moral obligation to utilize my brain power. 20-year-old me has a different mindset. As I followed my passions and pursued more and more hobbies, I found my true calling - being a creative. I have been painting, writing, building toys, and sewing since elementary school but, I let these passions get swept under the rug. So, I decided to make a change. Within the year 2023, I have started my own clothing business and have two other jobs revolving around social media and marketing. I created my business by thrifting clothes, cutting them up, and hand-sewing them into new creations. While running both an Instagram and Depop account for my business, I am overjoyed at the fact that I get to show the world my unique designs.I recently made an even bigger change by leaving the engineering department. My new class schedule makes me ecstatic for the future and feel more motivated than I have ever felt. Although I could do engineering, I have learned that I truly can’t do something unless I am passionate about it. Passion and happiness are all I strive for in this life and being able to express my creative side is the most fulfilling added bonus.
