Through research and networking, I was able to raise eighty percent of the camp funds from local and governmental entities, which included a Romanian politician’s charitable organization to promote education in rural areas, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and a Peace Corps sub-committee promoting gender equality. As a result of having raised over $3,000 in funds, the girls were able to attend the weeklong camp in the Carpathian Mountains for $20 and was free for those who could not afford the fee. More notably, despite cultural, linguistic, and generational differences, we were able to create a safe environment for open dialogue about issues faced by Romanian women.
