Ras Puma, born Christopher Smith) traces his artistic journey back to his home in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, where he began chanting verses and even jotting down haikus in secret. Now his expressions are taking him around the globe as a vocalist for the internationally known Thievery Corporation. His voice can be heard on the band’s 2011 release Culture of Fear. Puma is also the lead singer for The Archives reggae band, which released its self-titled debut album on the ESL Music Label in 2012. When he is not doing music, he is practicing as a freelance photographer or reporting for duty at the youth media non-profit Gandhi Brigade as a Program Coordinator. Puma avidly searches for different ways to put a social justice spotlight on the next generation. Though he has yet to visit Jamaica, he is very encouraged by the Reggae Revival and stands in solidarity with the movement as a fellow practitioner acknowledging the origins of his beloved genre.
