About Cynthia Cooper

Cynthia Cooper is a best-selling author, keynote speaker, thought leader, and advocate. In 2002, Cynthia blew the whistle on fraud at WorldCom. WorldCom, once a Wall Street darling boasting the largest acquisition in history, the fifth most widely held stock and ranked by the Wall Street Journal as number one for highest return to shareholders over a ten year period, became the largest fraud, bankruptcy and civil settlement in corporate history. Following the WorldCom fraud, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act was passed into law. Cynthia was featured as one of twenty-five most influential working mothers in Working Mother magazine. She is the first woman to be inducted into the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Business Hall of Fame and is an inaugural inductee of the Institute of Internal Auditors American Hall of Distinguished Audit Practitioners. Cynthia is the first woman to receive the American Accounting Association’s Accounting Exemplar Award for making notable contributions to professionalism in accounting education and practice and is a recipient of the Maria & Sidney E. Rolfe Award for her contributions to educating the public about economics, business and finance. In 2020, Cynthia was selected by TIME Magazine to be included in 100 Women of the Year, TIME’s list of the most influential women of the last 100 years. In 2002, she was named one of TIME Magazine’s Persons - The Year of the Whistleblowers. In her book Extraordinary Circumstances, Cynthia shares her experiences as a whistleblower. She has dedicated time to sharing her insights and recommendations to strengthen whistleblower protections, trust and transparency in the capital markets. Cynthia currently serves on numerous boards. She previously served as Chair of the Board of Regents for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the Academic Relations Committee for the IIA and as a member of the Standing Advisory Group of the PCAOB. In 2022, Cynthia was named one of eight Alumni Fellows by Mississippi State University. In 2022, she was named one of ten internal audit thought leaders. Cynthia has been featured in periodicals such as The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CFO Magazine and Business Week. She has served on panels with notables such as Anderson Cooper, Brian Williams, Donna Brazile, and Grover Norquist and has appeared on programs including Fox Business’ America’s Nightly Scoreboard, PBS’s Tavis Smiley, NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, CSPAN’s BookTV, CNBC’s The Big Idea with Donnie Deautsch, and CNBC’s Squawk Box.
