Bristol Chemical Synthesis CDT Student, working with Prof. Paul Pringle on organophosphorus and organometallic chemistry.My main projects involve the synthesis of novel compounds that display therapeutic activity or luminescent properties. This involves the handling of air- and moisture-sensitive materials and characterisation techniques such as multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, x-ray crystallography, UV/visible and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Worked on the synthesis and reactivity of organopalladium(IV) complexes in the research group of Prof. Andrei Vedernikov. Specifically trained in preparing sensitive intermediates and monitoring their reactivity using multinuclear NMR techniques.

Design of novel carboranyl phosphines for use in catalytic cross-coupling reactions. Developed key skills in air- and moisture-sensitive synthetic chemistry, in particular regular use of Schlenk lines and gloveboxes.

Developed novel optical features with applications to the paper and polymer banknote industries. Became proficient with a Heidelberg laser lithography instrument to fabricate a range of microstructures which were characterised by a combination of optical microscopy, 3D laser scanning confocal microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Gained insight and confidence over 12 months as an integral member of an active R&D department. Developed inter-personal skills by working closely with colleagues in different departments including senior managers, sales, engineers, scientists and supply chain.
