What is soil? Is it an inert substance we put our plants into? Does it take thousands of years to make? Or is it possible we have been preventing this resource from providing what it was meant to. In knowledge based learning and in field practical application many conventional farming methods can work, for a time. But there is a tendency to overlook glaring problems associated with these methods. When amidst the challenges that mother nature brings about such as the most recent drought, with a limited supply of water, I was made to look to new pathways to infiltrate and store water in the soil. When water is a limited resource, our ability to create a sustainable system diminishes, the amount of chemical fertilizer needed is a high cost of what a healthy structured soil system will produce. This journey has led me to search out practices to rebuild soil health. Through this research, it has led me on a path in search of concepts and principles of Regenerative Agriculture and applying it to viticulture. I understand very little of how the microbial world underneath our feet operates but am inspired by what I have learned to work toward a goal of synergy between plants and the land. Respecting the balance between the natural and the human interaction through land management. Through the years my drive to learn as much as I can from the many aspects of the agriculture industry, proves to me this is the work I love. I have lived on some of the most beautiful ranches in the US from California to Texas and a few in between. I have learned a great deal from some amazing people through my work experience alone.
