I recruited volunteers and coordinated activities at the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House homeless shelter in Sioux Falls, SD. I found groups looking to give back to their community and provide valuable essential services to our guests. I put my journalism experience to use here updating social media and website content and maintaining established community connections to grow the volunteer base at the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House. In this role, I was also able to grow my skills in development and communication, helping raise money for the organization and putting out our message to the community.

As a contributor to Argus Leader Media's Argus911, I cover breaking news and anything crime related. My day-to-day consists of anything from covering a breaking news situation, such as a house fire or shooting, to crime trend stories. I work the later shift, 1 to 10 p.m., when a lot of sources aren't in the office, so I've had to learn to be clever and persistent in finding sources in the evening hours. We have a pretty small staff, so I also help out when needed with any general assignments.

I'm looking forward to this experience to help me learn how to become a better reporter, storyteller, writer, multimedia guru and professional.

As one of the news editors for the Iowa State Daily, I was in charge of about 15 news reporters. I made sure they were following their beats and getting their stories in on time. I was also a resource for any help or advice they needed, newspaper related and beyond.

I covered Faculty Senate and Board of Regents from my freshman to junior years at Iowa State. The experience taught me how to interact with people in positions of authority and source development.

I covered general assignments, feature stories and breaking news - including floods, drownings, accidents, etc. - as a news intern for the Argus Leader. I had a wonderful experience and got the chance to work with and learn from great people, as well.

As an unpaid intern with Network Against Human Trafficking, an Iowa based human trafficking awareness organization, I created the network's Facebook and Twitter pages and updated the pages regularly to raise awareness on the issue.
