Managed a team of four to develop, maintain and protect the UK Global Tariff – the first tariff applied in the UK since the 1970s. This involved building extensive relationships across government, throughout DIT and with Ministerial offices, to ensure that I, my team and my stakeholders remain aware on the UK’s wider strategic objectives, and how the UK Global Tariff policy fits into those objectives. Defended DIT policy in cross-government development of tariff policy in the event that the UK would not achieve a Free Trade Agreement with the EU, including leading the department’s preparation of Cabinet position papers.

Led the department’s work on agriculture trade interdependencies, in SPS, Intellectual Property and tariffs. This involves gathering and compiling conflicting opinions, and driving decisions across government that align with the steers from the Prime Minister and Cabinet committees.Led the drafting of the initial paper on a single regulatory zone on the island of Ireland - gathering positions from across a range of departments, and evidence from a range of sources, to distil it down to simple but precise advice for the Prime Minister.

Established a cross-sector working group on green finance projects in India: networking across the city, bringing in willing participants to a forum to support a common purpose of promoting green finance in India, from London financiers.Established a secretariat function to support the Green Investment Principles for the Belt and Road: building and adapting shared goals with Chinese counterparts, while ensuring that the principles and project as a whole supported corporate objectives.

Led a successful Budget initiative that will see Customs receive additional funding to support its trade facilitation work programme. This involved coordinating managers across the organisation to develop a cohesive and convincing argument for additional funding and preparing papers to Ministers and the Treasury.

Passed a controversial bill through parliament. This included leading the oral and written advice to Select Committee (which officials are responsible for in New Zealand, not Ministers) and supporting the Minister in the debating chamber during Committee of the whole House stage.Investigated high profile trade remedies applications, including one alleging subsidisation of Chinese steel on time and to a high standard. This involved representing New Zealand while consulting with foreign governments, working with domestic industry, drafting reports and preparing media and risk strategies for senior officials and Ministers. Trained and mentored graduate staff. I trained a graduate colleague from her first day at the ministry. Initially it involved building her understanding of the department and the mechanics of government. After a while I trained her in job-specific areas like briefing ministers, and trade remedies investigations.

Led a successful Budget bid to alleviate a housing shortage in New Zealand. This involved preparing cost benefit analyses and maintaining a strong rapport with contacts at the Treasury to achieve its support of the bid.Managed central-local government accords with four local councils. This involved continual engagement and relationship management between department and council, and department and Minister.
