About Darby Williams

In everything I do, I am an artist.Nearly every morning, I craft personalized beverages for hundreds of tired customers and make their day a little brighter. Every afternoon, I write and edit short stories, novels, or non-fiction pieces. And every evening, I engage in one of my myriad hobbies: crochet, typesetting, or diving into the next book on my "To Read" shelf. I spend my days paying attention to those little details: the shape of the paragraph on the page, keeping the color of a character's cloak consistent across chapters, or creating the perfect micro-foam in a pitcher of steamed milk.I love stories: reading them, watching them, telling them, and sharing the stories of others. As a former educator, I especially love children's stories, both fiction and non-fiction. All stories hold truth, whether it's in the facts on the pages of a biography or the moral message at the heart of a fairy tale. My goal is to both find and convey truth in all of my work, whether in the pages of my stories or in my smile as I hand out a latte.

Listed skills include Event Planning, Leadership, Public Speaking, Community Outreach, and 1 others.

Barista

Atlanta, Georgia, United States

I prepared drinks in a fast-paced environment. I utilized strict attention to detail and multi-tasking abilities to prepare up to three complex beverages at a time during every minute of our two-hour morning rush. I communicated effectively with both my fellow partners behind the bar and the customers in front of it. I proactively maintained a smooth workflow by preparing back-up supplies and improving store cleanliness and organization at every opportunity. I then elected to become a barista trainer. I spent 20-25 hours with each trainee, teaching store procedures and proper routines. In this position, I learned to complete complex tasks in fast-paced, high pressure environments. I improved my multi-tasking abilities and furthered my ability to support others around me. I used my organization and communication skills to their fullest extents.

Event Coordinator

Atlanta, Georgia, United States

I coordinated the Phoenix Flies event, a three-week city-wide event in Atlanta, GA. We hosted over 150 free tours in collaboration with over 90 partner organizations. College Adviser

Murphy, Nc

I advised approximately 90 students individually and in groups on their options for post-secondary education, including trade schools, community college, and 4 year institutions. Nearly all of my students were the first in their family to consider college, and so I assisted both them and their families on the college application process. By using various metrics and data collection, I was able to determine that 98% of the senior class submitted at least one college application, exceeding my goal of 90%. I became a mentor for my students, offering advice and support on their post-high school goals and motivating them to achieve their vision. In this job, I grew immensely as a leader. I had to take initiative to create opportunities for my students that would otherwise not seek these out for themselves. I had to learn how to motivate others in a genuine way, relying on the connections I developed with students and faculty to aid this process.

Cheerleading Coach

Hiwassee Dam High School

Murphy, Nc

I coached 17 high school girls during the basketball season, leading two hour practices three times a week and managing the girls during games up to twice a week. By the end of the basketball season, school administration, faculty, and fans were complimenting the team on their performances and behavior during games. In this position, I grew to value relationships with others even more than I had before. As a coach of the team, I was a mentor and role model for my team. I set the tone of practices, facilitated connections and team bonding, and mediated conflicts as they arose. I learned to be dependable, positive, and enthusiastic even in the face of stress or anxiety, as my reactions to difficult situations often dictated the behavior of the team.

Work Study Student

Davidson College Office Of Psychology

Davidson, Nc

I maintained a detailed organization system for the office, carefully tracking physical resources and managing shared digital records to aid this process. This process involved scanning physical documents, editing PDFs to ensure high quality and clear records, and disposing of documents in alignment with policies and regulations. Because of my work, when the office moved to a different location in June 2017, the number of boxes to relocate was decreased by 25%. During my last few months in the office, I managed other employees, training them in the maintenance of the filing system and delegating tasks. In this position, my organization skills increased dramatically. Maintaining the online file systems required attention to detail and a high level of accuracy. I passed these skills onto other employees.

President, Vice President (Previous), Technical Director (Previous)

Davidson College Dance Ensemble

Davidson, Nc

As President, I presided over two semiannual performances (in April and November of 2016) that met goals and remained on budget. I managed a team of 6 executive board members. Together, we created a plan for each show and I delegated tasks to each member based on their role, skills, and availability. I facilitated weekly team meetings for task updates and communicated frequently with various shareholders to clarify goals and mitigate risk. During my time as President, I was able to secure budget increases from college supervisors. As technical director, I served as the main liaison between the choreographers and technical staff. I coordinated and led an educational event for choreographers to instruct them on the completion of technical documents. I worked closely with both choreographers and technical staff to ensure that the creative vision of each piece was realized in the lighting and production of the show. After my event, I received feedback from theater staff that the lighting sheets were "the best we've ever seen."My time on the executive board was foundational in the development of my skills. I became a leader in my community, setting the vision for the organization and its 200 members. My communication skills developed considerably as I learned to engage with others quickly and effectively via email, phone calls, and in person meetings and events. I learned to manage time, budgets, and people. Best of all, I was able to collaborate and make connections with a wide variety of people in my community: classmates, choreographers, college staff, and technical staff.
