In my work, I enjoy being challenged with the unexpected. Every day, I hope to be faced by a situation where I can say something like, "Well, I guess I'm learning Python today!". My desire to seek out challenges bleeds into my personal life as well, whether it be looking for new uses for my Raspberry Pi's, or learning to self-host a website on Google Cloud. This pattern of behavior has marked me as someone who can 'figure it out', no matter what.When I'm asked to solve a problem, I relish the opportunity to explore new ways of thinking. For instance, when a client asked me for a seamless, silent way to update Slack on their macOS devices, I wrote a self-updater in bash that works smoothly and effectively. Not only did I manage to provide a solution, but I also used that chance to improve my knowledge of bash scripting and macOS in general, which has come in handy since then.My desire to work on these kinds of tasks comes from a deeper need to improve organizations in any way that I can. In each of my roles, I've contributed to long-lasting organizational improvements. From configuring automatic profile deletion on public computers at the Community Colleges of Spokane, to greatly expanding how SCCM was used at Morrison Child and Family Services, to removing multiple manual steps of macOS deployment at Fixed Fee IT, I always find a way processes can be improved and take the initiative to lead those projects.During college, when people found out I was studying Mandarin Chinese, they often asked, "Why?". The simple answer is that I wanted another challenge. When I lived in Taiwan for nine months studying Mandarin, I used one of my final presentations (in Mandarin of course) to talk about using RADIUS authentication with Active Directory. That might sound like an odd topic, but the truth is I was hoping the program's IT manager, sitting off to my left, might hear what I was saying and implement it, since connecting to the WiFi there was a pain. Better yet, I would have liked it if I could have helped him! I was ready to do anything to improve the program for myself and my fellow students.When I do drag myself away from my continuous IT projects, I'm playing video games, either alone or with my wife and friends, or walking our rambunctious red heeler Raynor through the neighborhood.
