Mar 2018 - Apr 2021

Linux Lead Support Architect

Greater Seattle Area

In the summer of 2017 TriCore Solutions was acquired by Rackspace to flesh out their application services offering.I continued to support my accounts as the principal system engineer despite the title change along with being a SME on much of our existing infrastructure. In parallel I took a leading role in building out the group's new infrastructure in the Rackspace datacenters for future growth. When the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities were revealed in early 2018, I took charge of completing our VMware ESXi upgrades to prepare - finishing a project in a month which had been worked on sporadically over the previous year.

Jun 2017 - Mar 2018

Principal Systems Engineer

Greater Seattle Area

Joined TriCore as one of the Principal Systems Engineers on the Linux/Storage/Virtualization team supporting approximately one fifth of the accounts. My day to day is divided up between supporting escalations on those accounts from our 24x7 SA team and engineering work on our platform in general.Technologies involve are various versions and distributions of Linux (RHEL, OEL, Ubuntu, CentOS and others depending on the customer's needs), VMware, Oracle Virtual Manager, Infinidat storage, Brocade/HP and Cisco SAN switches, and many supporting bits and pieces.Much of my first few months involved improving and rearchitecting our Brocade SAN to improve stability and optimize traffic flows. These efforts were very successful and helped unlock the performance potential of our industry leading Infinidat arrays.Being able to use and integrate with Amazon Web Services is increasingly important to our customers in addition to using TriCore's own cloud resources. To that end I obtained the AWS Solutions Architect Associate and the AWS Sysops Associate certifications.

May 2016 - Jun 2017

Senior It Systems Architect

Greater Seattle Area

Joined the Engineering Services & Support team - a unique team within Xerox that focuses on hosting internally developed apps for customers. I was brought on to stabilize their storage environment, work to reduce storage costs, and be their Linux subject matter expert.Through a series of migrations and storage redesigns we were able to stabilize the environments and stop the outages impacting our internal customers. We retired several storage devices that added complexity but little no no benefits to the environment, saving costs and adding simplicity. After that I was able to present a series of proposals to replace our legacy storage hardware with a much more capable solution at a half to a sixth of our current costs.Began implementing automated configuration management via Puppet in our Linux environments with an eye to rolling out Satellite server.Studied and prepared to take the Cisco CCIE Datacenter certification, but ultimately left the company just before I had planned to take the written exam.

Mar 2015 - May 2016

Sr. It Operations Automation Engineer

Rochester, New York Area

Recruited to build out the new IT operations automation team at Paychex. Our team has been tasked with selecting and implementing both enterprise orchestration and server automation. After an in depth evaluation process we selected BMC Atrium Orchestrator and BMC Bladelogic and are currently implementing those. The team's processes are heavily based around Atlassian's Confluence and JIRA products.

Jun 2013 - Mar 2015

Senior Storage Architect

Rochester, New York Area

Advanced to technical leader of the storage team. Was the primary subject matter expert on Paychex’s SAN which underpinned the entire business. Lead the multiple efforts that changed our Cisco SAN fabrics from a vendor installed single switch per fabric environment into whatit is today - a multi-datacenter fully redundant set of fabrics linked via metro fiber that experienced zero unplanned downtime during my time at Paychex. I accomplished several generations of firmware and hardware upgrades to extend the life of our switch investment and prepare for thefuture with FCoE.Lead the effort to move our primary storage platform to a fleet of IBM XIV arrays. The change resulted in large performance and availability increases, ease of management allowing half the number of FTEs dedicated to online storage as before and cutting the acquisition cost by two thirds. We were also a very active customer working with XIV and were an early adopter of the very advanced generation 3 XIV arrays with SSD.The team was also responsible for engineering and maintaining Paychex’s offline storage infrastructure. Based on Netbackup, it was a large environment consisting of both tape (IBM Ultrascalable 3584 libraries) and deduplication devices (EMC DataDomain, Symantec Puredisk). The environment consistently had a 98-99% job success rate over time, a figure almost unheard of in the industry for such a large environment.Continued to develop the custom web application into a full Python/jQuery/SQL application, expanding it into storage event collection and correlation which processed approximately 1.5 million events in its first year. Was a liaison to the Virtual Infrastructure team owing to my VMware background, given that they were our largest customer. Also served as liaison to the Oracle and MsSQL teams due to my background in RDBMS administration.

Jul 2010 - May 2013

Senior San Engineer

Rochester, New York Area

Senior member of the enterprise storage team at Paychex, responsible for both online (SAN/NAS) and offline (tape/backups) storage. Primary storage platforms were EMC Symmetrix (DMX and VMAX), EMC Clariion, IBM Ultrascalable Tape, Netapp filers, DataDomain, Symantec Netbackup and Cisco MDS switches.Spent a lot of hours cleaning up the environment after I arrived, standardizing naming conventions as part of the move from McData to Cisco switches. Developed a custom web application written in PHP and Python to manage the storage creation workflow and synchronize all WWN aliases across all storage platforms, increasing accuracy and speed, replacing over $1m of 3rd party software that required a dedicated FTE to manage.

May 2008 - Jul 2010

Unix System Administrator

System administrator for IBM, assigned to NSTAR Electric and Gas in Boston. Supported all of the customer’s Sun and DEC Tru64 systems across multiple data centers. Primary Netbackup administrator for 4 large environments. Implemented several large SunFire 6800 midframe systems. Primary administrator/implementor of a SAN consisting of StorEdge T3 arrays, Symmetrix DMX and Clariion CX3 arrays, and McData director switches in each datacenter. Developed a custom configuration management system that retained daily information in a very space efficient manner. Implemented a new critical environment consisting of clustered Linux servers that served as the SCADA power grid monitoring for Boston.

Aug 2002 - May 2008

Unix Level 2+ System Administrator

Ajilon

System administrator for Xerox’s global datacenter, responsible for approximately 150 Sun Solaris UNIX servers. Hardware from workstations to Ultra Enterprise 10000 systems, plus StorEdge T3 and EMC Symmetrix storage arrays. Primary DNS administrator for the datacenter.

Aug 2000 - May 2002

Network/System Administrator

Progressed through many positions at Retrotech, from high school intern to Projects System Administrator. I was the go-to guy for pretty much anything technical, whether it was managing the email system, administrating HP-UX boxes that ran automated warehouses, or building Linux firewalls for an on demand WAN system.
