I advise my clients on pursuing and protecting their intellectual property rights, including counseling them on utility and design patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. Much of my practice focuses on preparing patent applications and then prosecuting the applications in front of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office while striving to obtain broad and valuable claim coverage for my clients.My chemical engineering educational background and diverse work experience help me represent clients in a wide range of industries, including biotechnology, renewable energy, semiconductors, polymer materials, machine learning/artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics. I am comfortable speaking about extremely technical inventions with inventors and translating the details of the invention into a patent application. My clients range from start-ups to Fortune 500 corporations.Prior to joining the practice of law, I worked as a senior engineer for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. I published widely cited technical papers on biofuels and was frequently an invited speaker on the topic. Before NREL, I served as a senior process engineer for Intel Corporation in Hillsboro, Oregon. My Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley focused on high pressure microplasmas. I have a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering and a minor in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology I enjoy volunteering. I have served on boards and commissions for the City of Louisville (Colorado) and Boulder County, and I volunteer as an exhibit interpreter at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.In my spare time, I enjoy snowboarding, camping, and gaming (board and video).
