About David Macleod

A dedicated, practically oriented environmental risk management professional with wide multi-sectoral experience in the municipal and private sector context. Focus since 2007 has been on strategic implications of physical risks associated with climate change impacting infrastructure systems and vulnerable populations. A pioneering leader in municipal climate change policy, strategy, risk assessment and adaptation action. A policy and engagement facilitator interfacing with multiple non-municipal sectors addressing interdependencies and risk of cascade failure in cities - including electrical, telecom, commercial real estate, regional transit, food systems and natural gas supply. Also active in understanding public health and natural systems implications of our changing climate as these factors will affect vulnerable residents of Toronto. Recognized as a thought leader in practical application of municipal climate related financial disclosure following the Guidelines of Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosure. I have had a catalytic role through in the Canadian Municipal Network for TCFD. Active with other networks such as C40, USDN, Asset Management Ontario's Committee on Climate Change and Asset Management and the GTA Clean Air Council. Member of the Public Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Committee (PIEVC) Advisory Panel. Prior to joining the City of Toronto, career focus was environmental management systems and auditing for a dozen industry sectors, working across Canada as well as the northeastern US and the Middle East. Client sectors served included electrical (generation / transmission / distribution), banking, mining, military, food distribution, chemical manufacturing and distribution, building supplies, aerospace, forestry, pulp & paper, automotive, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and health care. Outcomes for clients were evidence of due diligence, regulatory compliance, protection of reputation and social license to operate, reduced environmental impacts, cost savings and business stability. For over a decade as an Adjunct Professor at U of T and Ryerson University (now TMU), taught undergraduate, masters level and private sector professional training courses on environmental auditing, management systems and urban climate adaptation. An outdoor enthusiast recharged by spending time with friends biking, wilderness canoeing, backpacking, kayaking, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, windsurfing, sailing and skating.
