What am I about? Easy - my business focuses on training and compliance for new and existing adult workers involved with Temporary Traffic Management across New Zealand. As well as training under the new NZTA Competency Model, I also prepare Traffic Management Plans, undertake Temporary Traffic Management audits, and advise businesses on their training needs to ensure compliance in these areas with their Health and Safety at Work obligations. That's the business stuff out of the way. Now onto the important bits.What makes adult learners different from younger and many tertiary learners? Adults already come with a foundation of personal and business experience. When working in this environment therefore, it's essential to build on the foundation individuals bring with them, and then to enable a framework which recognises, respects and expands this existing knowledge. But what if the learner's foundation is lacking in some areas, or the learner is not at a necessary level of literacy? Well, it's actually quite straightforward - that's MY job to understand, to support, to coach, mentor, and adjust MY style and course content to meet the LEARNER'S requirements. That's why you'll find most of my classes are smaller, not 15 to 18 learners in a room and force-fed in an old-school didactic approach. Yes, many training organisations in this industry still actually do that! My classes are fun, still with the serious, standard set of learning outcomes, but achieved by means of a supportive learning environment, conducive to understanding and actually retaining information. We are dealing with a serious subject after all - road workers' and the public's safetyOne of my learners said to me the other day that they had learned at least 75% more in my class than they had in the last one. That's exactly what I'm about.
