As the sole Teacher of Geography, at Marlborough College Malaysia, an independent international boarding school following a British curriculum, I was responsible for planning, resourcing and delivering all Geography content for Years 9-11, as well as planning and delivering the IB DP Geography programme for teaching commencing September 2014. The role required me to quickly mature as a teacher, independently taking control of all aspects of planning and delivering the Geography curriculum in a young, developing school, working within a small Humanities department. Responsibilities included lesson planning, designing short and long-term schemes of work, organising and resourcing fieldwork, reporting, designing and marking all assessments. In the first year this was done whilst completing a Secondary PGCE with the University of Buckingham and on a full timetable. Despite these pressures, the feedback that I received from pupils and colleagues was outstanding, and the Year 11 pupils that I prepared for IGCSE examination gained 68% A*-A and 94% A*-C (55 pupils) in 2014 and 2015 combined at a non-selective school.A key component of the role was creating all plans and documentation necessary for the school to gain authorisation as in IB world school, including final interviews with IB staff. This also required me to complete IB training; I have completed Category 1 (online) and Category 2 (IB workshop) training. As the role was in an international school, I am also experienced working with pupils with English as an additional language.
