A specialist criminal law barrister, with expertise in international criminal law. He is a formerly appointed Lead Defence Counsel in the Hague's Specialist Kosovo Chambers(KSC), and has worked in the Hague since 2011 on a number of different cases, before three different International courts. On 12 November 2020 he was appointed lead Defence Counsel for Mr. Rexhep Selimi, who has pleaded Not Guilty to an indictment alleging Crimes against Humanity and War Crimes before the KSC. David led a team of international lawyers, which included Co-Counsel Geoffrey Roberts, and Co- defended with Ben Emmerson QC, CBE, and Gregory Kehoe(who acted for the former President of Kosovo, Mr Hashim Thaci), and Rohini Alagendra. Acted for the defence from 2020-2024. The Prosecutors included Jack Smith ( currently prosecuting former US President Trump) and include Alex Whiting.Between 2011-2020 he was appointed Lead Defence Counsel to represent the rights and interests of Assad Hassan Sabra before The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL). Sabra was accused of involvement in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister, Mr. Rafik Hariri. Sabra was charged in relation to the homicide of 22 persons, the Attempted homicide of 226 persons and terrorism offences relating to the detonation of 2-3 tonnes of explosive materials. The trial commenced on the 16 January 2014. On the 18 August 2020 the STL Trial Chamber delivered their Judgment, and acquitted Assad Sabra of all charges. The Prosecutors did not seek to appeal against the acquittals in the Sabra case. His Defence work at the STL was commended in the 2019 Financial Times Europe Innovative Lawyers Awards, and also in the British Legal Awards 2019.The Lebanon Tribunal is the first tribunal of international character to prosecute terrorist crimes and is the first International Court to conduct a trial in the absence of an accused. Between 2018 - 2019 David was appointed Counsel in a further International case in another of the Hague’s international courts. In 2019-2020 he also advised UNODC counter- terrorism agencies as an Expert. Author of 'Abuse of Process in Criminal Proceedings', with David Corker, of Corker Binning, and Mark Summers QC , of Matrix Chambers.
