“Hands On” Software Architect – From Prototype To ProductEvery development organization has to make design decisions and tradeoffs that will maximize the benefits to the applications’ users, while minimizing development risk and cost. I use my skill in understanding the needs of the customer, and my ability to quickly assess new technologies, to help organizations make those decisions based on the potential for business value, rather than solely on technical merit. A typical project starts with a new feature concept or a desire to leverage new technology. Before management can make a decision on whether to invest in the feature or technology, the concept needs to be investigated and fleshed out. I generally develop a "proof of concept" prototype that makes the tradeoffs clear. In cases where the decision is made to move ahead with the concept, I join the product development team and work side by side with the other developers to bring the project to its initial release. For example of my work and communications skills, see this interview on MSDN ARCast: http://channel9.msdn.com/shows/ARCast.TV/ARCastTV-Dennis-McCarthy-on-Platform-as-a-Service-PaaS/Specialties: • ability to rapidly learn new technologies and understand how to best leverage them• ability to make trade off decisions between business value and development cost and risk• presentations to business and technical audiences

UI architect/developer in Learning Management Applications & Services. Designed the UI software for a suite of learning modules, and led the development team. Worked with UX designers to translate their visual and interaction designs into HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript. The software design is based on the MVVM pattern, using the jQuery and Knockout JavaScript libraries.
Member of the advanced development group at Kronos.Kronos Workforce Central (WFC) is the market leading enterprise workforce management software. My projects included:• Touch Screen UI: create a touch screen user interface for an embedded device using standard web application technology (HTML/CSS/JavaScript/AJAX). I prototyped custom portal components for SharePoint (.Net) and WebSphere (JSR-168), and then lead the product development team that turned the prototype into a product feature. I also trained the service organization how to configure and customize the portal components.• Software as a Service: offer the Kronos product as a service(Platform as a Service), using cloud technology. As a member of a small team, I designed a data model and query interface based on XML schema and XPath, designed a high performance ETL process based on Oracle message queues and PL/SQL jobs, and devised a method for pre-computing , storing and retrieving query results using an inverted bit map algorithm.• Personalizable User Interface: replace an ASP web application with a portal style user interface using .Net. InConcert was a Xerox business that turned a research prototype into a commercial workflow management product. The business unit was later sold to Tibco. The InConcert product is still in use today. I started as a research scientist, and eventually became chief architect.• Member of a team of three research scientists who developed a prototype workflow management system, which was then a new category of software.• Architect and lead developer for the first release of InConcert; its n-tier, object oriented architecture is still not obsolete 20 years later• Chief architect for subsequent releases, continuing my technical leadership within engineering and adding externally facing responsibilities: communication with customer and analysts, and representing InConcert on the Workflow Management Coalition.
