The mission of Global Ties ABQ is to contribute to world peace by creating global connections among the people of New Mexico and emerging leaders from around the world. We do this through international exchange programs, local educational programs, and international community-building activities.

Global Ties ABQ is Central New Mexico’s link to the international community. Each year, we host more than 350 international visitors in Albuquerque through U.S. State Department Citizen Diplomacy programs. We connect our visitors, who come to build professional skills, exchange ideas, and form partnerships, to our local community through meetings, dinners, and community conversations.On top of my work with the International Visitor Leadership Program, as a program coordinator I took on new roles and projects. Specifically, I had my first opportunities to facilitate longer term exchange programs. In 2017 and 2018, Global Ties ABQ was one of the implementing partners for the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI). This U.S. Department of State which brings the brightest, most creative entrepreneurs from Latin America and the Caribbean to U.S. cities. YLAI Fellows work with local mentors and hosts to hone their ideas and programs, learn best practices, and build their global networks. These programs were very memorable and resulted in significant long term impact on the lives of the fellows along with the Albuquerque professionals who they engaged with.

The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is a U.S. Department of State ran professional exchange program that builds mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging leaders. U.S. embassies organize delegations to visit cities and communities around the United States to exchange best practices, discuss important issues of the day, form partnerships, and strengthen cultural awareness. IVLP programs cover a wide range of topics such as the rule of law, food security, women entrepreneurship, and many others. When delegations of international visitors arrive in Albuquerque, Global Ties ABQ organizes meetings relevant to the delegation’s topic. We also ensure they get a taste of all the magic that New Mexico has to offer – the food, diversity, history, natural wonders, and more.During my time as a Programs Intern, I supported the facilitation of these exchange programs as well as assisted with other administration tasks such as social media and events.
