I won a copy of "Lord of the Rings" in sixth grade when my short fiction was voted best story by my English class peers. That was the moment my writing career began. A few years later, our small town high school had its first "computer" class. We could type letters and numbers and the computers would do something. It was magical. I was sure that I would either become a) a writer, b) a software developer, or c) a French translator for the UN. Four years of college, two years of French, and one calculus class later, I'd graduated with a degree in International Relations. It would seem I was headed down the latter path with my college degree in hand.For a while, my career careened along all three of these paths. In the end it was the failed calculus class and its textbook that extolled "...from this example, it can easily be seen..." that carried me to writing and technical writing. I did not “easily see” from that textbook example and it became my roadblock. I am driven to learn and then help others understand things, through clear, simple content. Straightforward communication that makes sense is exciting. I believe this experience needs to be the goal, always, for writers and producers of content. Whether the product is a developer API doc, a report on IT recommendations made to a foreign government, or a fictional novel about a child's struggle to overcome life with a missing parent, I aim to meet the reader half way, to let them know they are not alone, and to help them understand.
