South Pole Water Plant Operator: Responsible for generation, testing and distribution of safe, clean drinking water at South Pole Station in Antarctica.

Provide budget, design, method development, staffing and training, commissioning, process optimization and quality control documentation for a turn-key cannabadiol extraction, analysis, blending and packaging operation. We will initially produce gelcaps and sublingual sprays for safe consumption of well-characterized doses of cannabadiols, terpenes and other whole plant extract components designed for both human and animal consumption.Post commissioning [mid-April 2017] research collaborations are expected to produce future clinical trials. Analysis and optimization of different cannabinoid profiles are next.

Senior Chlor-Alkali Chemist: Partnered with a diverse team to support Molycorp’s innovative initiative to recycle all waste extraction fluids saving approximately $13M/month. Purified and recycled mine waste is used as feed stock brine for the new Chlor-Alkali facility producing caustic, acid and bleach for use on-site and as new product streams.Designed new lab space, purchased instruments, established methods, hired/trained analysts for new Chlor-Alkali lab. Worked with engineers through pilot plant operations to optimize final design for operations. Met with representatives and supervised regular and surprise inspections by CalEPA and MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration). Analytics: ICP-MS, GC, AA, auto-titrations, UV-Vis and predictive estimates for ionic interactions. HazWoper, and CPR-AED-Emergency Medicine certified.

I trained at the University of Arizona prior to deploying to South Pole Station for an introduction to ARGUS, the unique software that adjusts and monitors parameters within SPFGC (South Pole Food Growth Chamber). As 2011 Winter Operator, I planned, planted, harvested and recorded production. Worked with a team of five chemists to improve the current LIMS, streamline data collection and optimize reporting limits in support of the wastewater treatment and sludge disposal efforts of the LEWWTF.Water quality measurements performed include: BOD, volatile suspended solids, ionic profile, nutrient content (phosphorus, nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, sulphur), pH, chlorine residue, dissolved oxygen and bacterial content.

Ecbc/Fac (Edgewood Chemical Biological Center/Forensic Analytical Center

My tenure at Battelle started with managing projects designed to optimize detection, decontamination and protection from chemical warfare agents, known as WMD. I designed and led field tests at Dugway Proving Ground. One project was named “10 Greatest Army Inventions” for the year.I was subsequently chosen as part of the team charged with setting up the Chemical Security Analysis Center as mandated by DHS and authoring the first set of Population Threat Assessments delivered to Congress under that mandate. Population Threat Assessments characterize threats posed by different classes of chemicals to the American public. Our Battelle team organized inter-agency working groups tasked with ranking and characterizing current threats and documenting our findings. The CSAC is also the designated federal agency to contact for information about any and all environmental releases of hazardous chemicals anywhere in the United States. We were on-call 24/7.I participated in design and testing of the DHS Environmental Emergency Response Van charged with assessing any environmental hazard on-site anywhere in the country within 24 hours. A unique grid sampling software package optimized the number of samples required to quickly assess the extent of the contamination area and a host of on-board instruments provided quantitation.Supported the Quality team to enhance ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 17025; supervised the CPRP (Chemical Personal Reliability Program); HazWoper Training and Certification, plus CPR certification; collected, analyzed, tracked and disposed of all lab samples at the Forensic Analytical Center. Analytics include: GC-MS, HPLC, LC, IR, FTIR.

Mcmurdo Station, Antarctica

Off-Ice duties involved planning, budgeting, and reviewing Antarctic research projects requiring analytical support. Partnered with groups funded by the NSF to develop methods, purchase instruments and ensure everything was delivered to the bottom of the world by the time they arrived.I deployed October through February to McMurdo with a staff of analysts to set-up instruments and run Analytical Services for dozens of research projects. Grantee Projects supported include: Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) studies of subglacial lakes; algal mat characterization in glacial melt; fish protein studies; and environmental monitoring of ice, water and soil. Responsible for all QA and waste/sample disposal/shipping. Analytics include: Elemental Analyzer (carbon, nitrogen, sulphur), AA, GC, HPLC, Latchet nutrient analyzer (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate), ICP-MS, plus wet chemistry techniques.

Sulzer Biologics grew from the observation that BMPs (bone morphogenic proteins) extracted from bone and implanted in muscle induces bone regrowth. I was hired to help transition the research lab and methods into a fully compliant FDA approved QC laboratory regulated under both CDRH and CBER as our product was both a medical device and a biologic.I oversaw design/construction of new laboratory; hired and trained the staff; revamped all testing methods and revised all associated documentation to fit FDA CFR 21. Brought this former research lab into cGMP compliance over a 3-year period. Testing methods used include: HPLC with UV detection, Ion Chromatography with electrochemical detection, ELISA, SEM, gel electrophoresis with densitometry for quantification, LAL endotoxin analysis, and an enzyme based in-vivo bioassay plus a histology based bioassay. Researched protein/peptide characterization using mass spec and sequencing.
