As the dedicated property lawyer for DuluxGroup's New Zealand operations I am primarily responsible for negotiating and preparing leases of new premises and variations to arrangements for existing premises.I am involved in planning at a strategic level for the expansion and repositioning of our business; identifying new sites and engaging with local agents, prospective landlords and their solicitors, and negotiating with existing landlords for alterations to premises and surrenders (in whole or part) as business needs at a given location change.Having previously acted for DuluxGroup in my private practice I am enjoying the opportunity to engage with the business at a deeper level in an in-house role.

In the UK the largest proportion of rental accommodation is provided as public housing through local authorities, in particular councils and their arms length management organisations. These 'council houses' come in all shapes and sizes throughout the country, from townhouses to high-density tower blocks, and are home to a mixture of government-supported and privately-funded tenants. Inevitably, there are disputes between the landlords and tenants, and disputes with other tenants in which the landlord may be required to intervene.The Ombudsman's role is to ensure that the landlord acts in accordance with its policies and with the law when resolving these disputes, and to ensure that there is a fair outcome to the dispute. Working with landlords, tenants, and other dispute resolution team members, I was responsible for ensuring that disputes were resolved through formal adjudication. In a typical case I reviewed the case file and submissions of the parties in light of the law and the published procedures of the landlord, requested further information from the parties if required, and determined the appropriate outcome to the dispute. That outcome was communicated to the parties in a formal report and I was responsible for ensuring that any remedy ordered was followed.

As a Graduate Lawyer at Clark McNamara Lawyers I performed a wide range of work and was involved in the Corporate and Commercial, Workplace, Dispute Resolution, and Estate Planning practice groups. I gained a solid grounding in both the formal and practical aspects of legal work, from drafting pleadings and negotiating contracts to handling ongoing client relationships and managing the budgets of their various matters. The areas I most enjoyed, and where I performed the bulk of my work, were Commercial Disputes and Sale of Business.In Commercial Disputes I focused on the review of contracts and advising clients on the most appropriate action to be taken when commercial relations break down and a breach of contract is inevitable. I enjoyed piloting corporate clients through contentious periods, preserving their commercial interests while ensuring that their conduct would be considered appropriate and defensible in subsequent proceedings.I was involved from start to finish in the sale of businesses in the medical, liquor, and business services sectors. These transactions included both asset and share sale models, of which I enjoyed the complexity of the latter. I particularly enjoyed the ongoing negotiations and compromises which inevitably emerged as commercial deadlines approached, and the increased pressure involved where regulatory or licensing approval was required for the sale to proceed.

During my time as a Paralegal at Australia's largest patent and trademark firm I worked in the Litigation and Biochemical and Life Sciences Patents teams. I began my work at Spruson & Ferguson as a research assistant on a summer work experience placement, and was involved in its very successful IPO.Some highlights of my time at Spruson & Ferguson are:- Verifying the prospectus for the successful IPO of IPH Limited;- Research for the Australian section of an international publication on the status of software under the various national patent regimes;- Assisting with patent infringement and invalidity proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia for a mechanical patent; and,- Being involved in the prosecution of pharmaceutical patents, and the management of patent portfolios for local and international pharma clients.

Working as a part time Paralegal for a leading Australian legal support company I provided litigation support for a range of Sydney's biggest law firms. My role centered on document management for litigious and commercial matters, and included data entry, scanning, and the compilation and presentation of court documents.Working to tight deadlines for demanding clients I gained an appreciation of the scope of legal proceedings at a top-tier level and a familiarity with a range of legal documents, while developing client management skills and attention to detail in a high-volume and high-stress environment. This role laid the foundation for my calm and adaptable approach to legal work.
