In college, I enjoyed racing sailboats. Sailing competitively incorporates my favorite aspects of being a leader and an engineer. First and foremost, sailing is about teamwork. Much like the human body where the strongest heart cannot overcome the failure of other organs, everyone must be on their game or you lose. Second, sailing requires analyzation of every aspect of the environment. Wind and water conditions are constantly changing, if you fail to adapt, you lose. Lastly, sailing is about tactics, much like chess, positioning is everything. Analyzation of conditions can make you fast, but find yourself in the wrong position and you lose. The lessons learned in college have transferred well to my professional life. I’m a seasoned power systems engineer with over 14 years of leadership experience in Utilities as well as the US Army. If I were to wrap up my professional style with three brief statements they would be:Determined: I cannot accept when I’m told things can’t be done. I find that anything is possible with innovation and sheer force of will. One must continually question "Why" and eventually a path can be found.Collaborative: I have tremendous faith in my own capabilities and yet I recognize that with a team behind me I can accomplish so much more. I find solid teamwork and team member development to be personally rewarding. Developing individuals to their full potential is the most important task of any leader.Analytical: I am not one to fly by the seat of my pants. I prefer a well thought out plan. I am cognizant of the “paralysis of analysis” and thus realize that only so much time exists to plan before opportunity vanishes. Having said that, without a plan there is no direction. Without vision and direction the best laid plans will inevitably move in the wrong direction. All plans require an understating of how they fit into the broad scheme of organizational goals.
