Eric Small is Professor of Medicine in the Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He holds secondary appointments in the Departments of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology (CMPP) and Biomedical Engineering (BME). Dr. Small is also Director of the Aab CVRI microsurgery and pathophysiology core. Dr. Small has a consistent record of funding from the NIH, the New York Department of Health, the American Heart Association, private foundations, and industry sponsors to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to the progression of heart disease. Dr. Small’s research group uses high throughput screening, in conjunction with mouse genetics, cell biology, advanced microscopy, bioinformatic and biochemical approaches to probe human disease-relevant questions relating to:• Cardiac fibroblast plasticity and the development of cardiac scarring. • Adaptive and maladaptive cardiomyocyte remodeling.• Coronary artery patterning and coronary artery disease research.The long-term goals of Dr. Small’s research are to prevent pathologic heart scarring and stimulate heart regeneration to improve cardiac repair and reduce the devastating burden of heart disease.
