Particular interests include the teaching of writing, curriculum development, creating project-based learning, the love of reading, developing critical thinking and questioning skills and supporting 'courageous conversations' on issues and concerns related to bullying, inclusion, respecting differences and race. Also, to encourage students to make connections with their learning beyond the classroom and lay the foundation to be a life long learner and to learn how they learn.Gone fishin' . . . Founded and directed the Oak Hill Fishing Team. I was the Head Angler of this middle school team. As far as I know, we were the only fishing team in all of New England and, after an eight-year run of both fall and spring fishing seasons, we were undefeated . . . ! The picture book, Mr. Arnold's Fishing Team by Diane Roston/illustrated by Luke Eastman, was inspired by the team's fun, outdoors adventures! The book is scheduled for release in February/2018. The Fishing Team was started to bring students together to foster a sense of community around the outdoors and to encourage cooperative learning by which students helped one other around fishing skills but mostly to develop bonds of friendship, a sense of belonging and a quest for 'non-electronic' fun adventures.

Hole in the Sock Productions was a non-profit audio production company that created comedic and realistic features about kids for NPR's nightly news and features program "All Things Considered"​. The spots centered around a comedy sketch that brought up an issue concerning children and parents along with edited interviews (vox pops) of children responding to that issue in their own words. HITS also created and produced an original series for WGBH/Boston (radio) titled "The Parenting Project"​ that centered around live call-ins to an expert panel on parenting and children's issues and featured a live improvisational "family"​ troupe​ to dramatize and illustrate the family dynamics callers were sharing and to encourage future discussion and understanding. Through HITS, we did countless artist-in-residencies and presented school and camp assemblies as well as for special events to introduce young audiences to radio drama as a 'new'​ live performance art. We also created two original children's books for Little, Brown and Company influenced and based on our on-air NPR work. I wore many hats through Hole in the Sock: Co-Founder, President, Head Writer, Talent Director and Grant Writer. It was an exciting, creative and productive ten-year run!
