I began developing the qualities of a great nurse long before starting college. For the past 10 years, I have worked as a farrier and equine physical therapist. Working with horses has taught me patience, resilience, and effective use of and ability to read body language. Furthermore, I utilize my communication skills to set appointments, discuss and troubleshoot health concerns, and to recommend follow-up care. My work with horses laid the foundation for my assessment skills and honed my attention to detail. Working with horses has instilled strength in me: physical strength, mental strength, and emotional strength.After starting college, I joined Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society (PTK), where I continued to develop the skills and traits essential to my nursing career. Every year I assisted in researching the needs of the community to formulate and implement service projects. As a leader with PTK, I work closely with administration. I learned to be creative and flexible to complete projects with a high degree of quality and within the given time parameters. In 2016, I wrote a case study which examined the Precision Medicine Initiative; the case study won an international award. The following year, I collaborated with officials at the University of Pittsburgh to help research ways to increase participation in the National Institute of Health’s All of Us research cohort (formerly the Precision Medicine Initiative). I will bring forth all of these skills, traits, an unsurpassed work ethic, passion, and dedication into my nursing career to ensure the absolute best care for my patients.
