Lead inventor on the development of an automated microplastic sampling device, called MantaRay, supported by funding from the Schmidt Marine Technology Partners. This sampler analyzes bodies of water for anthropogenic microplastic debris and reports real-time information on microplastic concentration, particle type (e.g. HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS), particle size, GPS location, and water temperature. In addition to collecting analytical information, microplastic particles are separated from the stream and catalogued for further analysis upon recovery of the instrument.- Mechanical design, assembly, and testing of a flow through fluidics system including a pump, solenoid valves, custom syringe pump, and custom optical flow cell.- Mechanical design, assembly, and testing of a sample changing apparatus using a linearly actuated belt drive and potentiometer location feedback system.- Design and integration of a raman spectrometer and laser excitation source for particle sensing using open source python API and a novel neural network classification algorithm.- Particle size determination based on methods in laser blocking, as well as with machine vision and post processing with open source python libraries.- Design and assembly of underwater pressure housing capable of withstanding harsh saltwater environments - Integration of open source serial slave microcontrollers onboard MantaRay to handle fluid and sample manipulation, GPS queries, syringe actuation, and to monitor onboard pressure housing conditions (humidity, temperature, and leak sensors).- Developed Python code to execute custom mission functions, analyze spectral data using an artificial neural network, and control onboard processes via serial communication- Managing budget, running website and instagram, performing market research, and leading outreach efforts at the Marine Science CenterFor more information, check out:www.mantaraysampler.com

Panama

Teaching Assistant for Northeastern University's Three Seas Program during the Panama portion of the program in Bocas Del Toro and Coiba, Panama. I teach the lab section for the Ocean and Coastal Processes class including labs in environmental fluid mechanics, coral reef internal wave propagation, phytoplankton and zooplankton distribution based on physical oceanography, and water wuality and pollution monitoring.

The overall focus of research in the Anderson laboratory is on toxic or harmful algae - the species responsible for the phenomena commonly called "red tides". My work for the Anderson Lab centered around the calibration and integration of Environmental Sample Processors (ESP) in the Gulf of Maine to detect Alexandrium blooms, informing local shellfish fisheries of potential threats to stocks in near real time via satellite communication with the ESP.- Calibrated and prepared a fleet of Environmental Sample Processors (ESP) for deployment to track the strength of Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) in the Gulf of Maine during the spring bloom- Assembled reagents, integrated molecular assay components, and build batteries for each ESP- Troubleshot software issues and programed code to produce streamlined missions- Wrote software for integration of CTD, SUNA nutrient analyzer, and toxin assay into the preexisting HAB mission - Improved a wireless cellular connection system to all machines in the field for real time data acquisition- Provided emergency response support and collected ground truth samples in ocean areas with high toxin levels

Woods Hole, Ma

Completed a semester in the Marine Biodiversity and Conservation program through SEA Education Association, focusing on intensive marine research and public policy and conservation efforts in the Sargasso Sea. The majority of the program was spent on the SSV Corwith Cramer, a 133 foot tallship that travelled from St. Croix to Woods Hole with research stops in Bermuda and New York City. My research surrounded the phylogeography and distribution of various marine bacteria from the genus Vibrio across four substrates in the open ocean: Sargassum seaweed, leptocephalli, phyllosoma, and marine plastic debris.
