Combining my passion for healthy oceans with my technical background, I investigated and successfully demonstrated the performance of a novel, hyperspectral infrared camera to detect plastic debris within imagery collected from a UAV (uncrewed aerial vehicle). My new contributions included the development of original algorithmic methods (programmed in MATLAB) that improved upon the detection performance of established remote sensing algorithms.

With a strong technical understanding of Ambri's novel liquid metal battery, I contributed to the technology's development by managing the supply chain for the research team's complex procurement requirements. Iterative component design and frequent updates to priorities provided an engaging challenge to source a variety of materials while optimizing quality, timeline, and cost. I'm very proud to have coordinated the on-time delivery of all seal assemblies necessary to successfully complete a 432-cell milestone prototype system.

As a member of the team of driven scientists and engineers at Eos, I contributed to the successful completion of the demonstration battery system for ConEdison (utility in NYC). In a fast-paced production environment, I gained valuable understanding of a variety of methods and controls critical to manufacturing and process scale-up. I quickly familiarized myself with Lean Six Sigma concepts and techniques, applying these to visualize and organize work flow, and to analyze process data for quality management of battery components.

I was thrilled to return to the Ambri team for a second opportunity to contribute as an engineering intern. This time, I enthusiastically learned SEM/EDX imaging and XRF analysis techniques, quickly delivering high-quality results. My initiative to adopt additional projects was rewarded through the engaging design and planning of experimental tests for cells with alternative chemistry, which achieved greater voltage at a reduced cost.

As well as the motivating, multidisciplinary team at this energy storage startup, I deeply value the ownership I ultimately assumed of the cell assembly process. Procedural improvements and my welding skill streamlined the process into a one-person task and reduced time requirements, promoting productivity in other areas. It was immensely fulfilling to become the go-to for this important stage and to train newcomers, too!

Adapting quickly to KPM’s mechanical laboratory environment, I eagerly became the expert in all stages of the graphite carbochlorination project, increasing the purity of graphite for use in Li-ion batteries and other electrochemical applications. The summative report I created for the company on the experimental design and findings of the project was recommended for an award by an Engineering faculty member at the University of Waterloo.

The productivity of the small Reactor Chemistry and Corrosion team at AECL increased as a result of my reliable, independent, and, admittedly, enthusiastic operation of the 2.5 MeV Van de Graaff particle accelerator to investigate reactor phenomena in aqueous solutions. I detailed and analyzed the experimental results in an award-nominated report that was greatly valued by the team.

I enhanced my contribution to the UW engineering community in this role by:1) Learning all 100+ names in the first year Chemical Engineering class. These students continued to acknowledge my positive and memorable impact throughout the following 4 years shared on campus.2) Voluntarily supporting the chemical engineering department's relocation of laboratories and equipment from one site to another.

Quickly identifying the main storage spaces of the chemistry department as opportunities for improvement, I performed a thorough inventory assessment and reorganization. A tracking system developed with Excel and VBA coupled with training led to improved safety and awareness among staff. Students also benefitted from new chemistry demonstrations that I performed and alternative experiments I assessed for suitability and repeatability.
