I enjoy infrastructure, I like protocols. I like that our brains act as a biological computer with some weird programming. Life feels like one big research project centered in technology. This is the foundation of modern cloud platforms.I've had a long career of studying open standards and protocols. Typically this comes in the form of open source projects like Linux and open protocols like TCP, DNS, and IPv6. Past positions have all been infrastructure-related like network engineering, Linux/server engineering and Internet communications. Converged all together with devops automation, and you have platform cloud computing.I've been a geek since I tinkered around with 6510 assembly language as a young teen. I'm particularly fond of OSS and Linux, as well as the Internet and networking in general. I believe open standards are what drives technological innovation and plants the foundation for extreme efficiency, so that all of society may benefit. If I can dissect it and repair it again, then I can understand it... the same applies for business relationships and technology. When you understand the machines, the tools people use, you can get inside their heads and understand them better. This aides in every field, including security. My idea of a "geek" is someone who is passionate about something, led my coining the term "geexology", studying people following their dreams and passions.Curiosity and passion often blur the lines between hobby and career, leaving you feeling fulfilled in purpose.Specialties: IP networking, VPNs, Linux, system administration, virtualization with Qemu/KVM. Enterprise-level internet and provider services. The open protocols like tcp/ip, dns, bgp. The stuff that runs the internet. Docker containerization. Infrastructure as code.Devops automation with ansible, terraform. Developing simple tools in golang. Security in terms of creating simple, elegant solutions that perform well but don't leave resources wide open. Creativity in technical projects. Asking the why.

Linux Services, Network & Cloud ArchitectGeexology Consulting Jul 1997 - Mar 2009Starting November 2013, Geexology LLC is a registered small business. It is no longer focused on consulting, rather more of a cloud and virtualization lab experiment. What we're working on is small virtual network services, to interconnect disparate cloud resources. Think overlay networks, NFV and SDN. Inter-connectivity should be light and virtual. We're excited to see where this goes.Prior to November of 2013:Focused on small, hand-picked Linux projects. Including DNS services, sendmail, LAMP(hp|erl), enterprise services, OS hardening, samba integration, IPtables/Netfilter firewall rules, snort IDS/IPS provisioning. Network security auditing and service optimization. Anti-spam/Anti-virus and squid proxy configuration. Kernel customization. Narrow customer base is currently limited to a few, very close friends and colleagues. Will often join small development groups, typically in chat channels (IRC) or on mailing lists, just to tech talk with dev teams or to help where I can. Including local LUGs, and projects like Xen, Gnash, DD-WRT, OpenWRT, iptables, samba, magnatune, Cisco-related OSS projects, and several webmail clients.Other projects include PXE servers, redesigning DNS structure for ISPs, Single Sign-On between a Windows Active Directory and Linux Samba file server, Virtualized lab environments using Linux Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM) for security testing.

System AdministratorNorthland Communications May 2001 - Jul 2006Syracuse, Ny, UsThis was the ultimate SysAdmin position. When I first started we were a Solaris/Cisco shop and migrated to a streamlined VMWare ESX/Linux/Cisco shop. I really cut my teeth and learned Cisco internetworking, and honed my Linux skillset in an enterprise environment. Not until I held this position was I comfortable enough to run Linux full time at home on my personal machines. Bash scripting, perl scripting, helped to manage the ISP core network for Dreamscape Online (now Northland Communications). Worked with a fantastic group of individuals. Working with the teams at Northland, you know you're working with the best of the best.
