Part of a team responsible for care and feeding of Linux (Ubuntu) servers at scale with Google Cloud, including writing Python, Lua, Shell scripts, and Ansible for orchestration. We use LXD, ELK stack, Nginx, MariaDB, and every shiny new version of PHP.One of my favourite highlights was finding an optimization in our cache invalidation code, which saw zero downsides and in some cases up to a ~3000% performance improvement.After a vendor withdrew a similar product, I built a small system for syncing lists of problematic IPs between heterogeneous hosts.I helped build our signature-based detection system which sniffs out malicious PHP in WordPress sites, while being light and performant. It includes a testing framework which helps reduce regressions in both false positives and missed detection, and CI to ensure changes go out as quickly and reliably as possible. This essentially powers our "Hack fix guarantee" and reduced our response time for compromised WordPress sites to minutes in many cases.In addition, I get to poke holes in WordPress plugins and report findings to the plugin developers, and I've been pretty annoying on the ZFS and LXD issue trackers too.

A small startup that originated in WordPress development and hosting, but quickly pivoted to a niche VOIP provider. I held a wide range of responsibilities including:- Administered servers: bare metal and Xen; FreeBSD, Centos, and Debian. Puppet for automation.- Building a web application and REST API for clients to interact with their VOIP service.- Developing, testing, and deploying integration between our billing software (PHP-driven) and several payment providers.- Contributing to several open source projects that our operation relied upon (in Python, PHP, JavaScript, and C++).- Built backup solutions for secure, efficient, and verified off-site backup of client data.
