UK based ERP Platform for hotels and restaurants. Worked as part of an experienced team to stabilise and improve their existing offering. Agile teams working with Php with MySql backend using GitHub. Queues running via RabbitMq and local docker environments. Working on small bugs right through to architectural designes and all things in-between. Recently adopting DevOps methodologies and improving reliability and deployability of code as well as testing practices.

My role was working in the Sports Back office Racing Team. This entailed maintaining and developing the back office systems used by the business to create and trade race fixtures. The technologies used were predominantly VB.net and C# with a heavy focus on Microsoft SQL database and thousands of Stored Procedures to develop and maintain. There was exposure to many other technologies including but not limited to AKKA, RIAK, golang and even VB6. They used Jira to manage tickets and Jenkins for continuous integration and deployment. Day to day I worked on support and small works tickets. I have had the opportunity to do some more involved small works projects – where my experience of simple design patterns and caching has allowed me to re- write several services to make them both more performant and reliable. One such re-write saw a single Stored Procedure execution count go from 16-18 million a day to 50-70 thousand a day – with significant reductions of SQL Server load. I have also had some success in bringing some test driven development practices on a few projects which has had great benefits of identifying bugs in systems where, by their nature, its hard to reproduce.

In this role I took over the running and maintenance of the companies Purchase Order system as well as around 75 other in house web-based applications which I have done remotely. The Purchase order System was a lynch pin around which the whole business' production systems pivoted and so is mission critical to business as usual. This has meant working with C#, MVC, EntityFramework, JSON api and AngularJS as well as being responsible for the MS SQL database. As this was a self-managed post I was primarily focusing on fixing issues as they came in as well as re-factoring code to be written more extensible and importantly Test-Driven manner – this served as a very effective development strategy. Most of the issues of performance I dealt with by changing SQL structures and statements to be more efficient as well as altering the AngularJS UI to more intelligently fetch objects as well as improving on the existing caching infrastructure.

Strict Test-Driven-Development and code reviews. I worked and learned a lot working in the Middle-Tier team which provided XML based Web Apis. Worked using the best OO Principles and in a very performance oriented system. The backend was moved AWS to enable better utilisation of resources at peak times. I worked on many projects from small changes through to architectural discussions which lead to various interesting projects - things like caching strategies and improvements and serialisation to reduce network utilisation.

This company was primarily VB.Net and similar Microsoft technologies. My role was to work on existing middle tier and back end systems to keep them working, some of which were in vbs and other procedural languages, while also re-developing them in the latest .NET versions and object oriented code. I was also heavily involved in designing and implementing various performance and load enhancements, leveraging things like object pre-caching and various pushing based system.

Taken on as a software dev to solve sql performance issues as well as primary responsibility of the main VB.Net service and Java Administration console. Solved the performance with Sql tuning as well as a rework of the system to instead trigger work onto queues. I was eventually the Software Team Lead and oversaw a complete system rewrite, delivered on time, using .Net 2.0 with a WCF service backbone.
