During my time at DBM Building Contractors, I worked as an assistant site manager at a project based in the centre of Edinburgh. The project involved the building of a large extension for a veterinary surgery and the entire fit-out of the main building. This role allowed me to improve my leadership skills, problem-solving skills, organisational skills and communication skills.My responsibilities included:• Conducting toolbox talks and performing inductions for new starts• Allocating and explaining tasks to all workers• Preparing weekly progress reports• Monitoring site progress and ensuring tasks were completed to the desired quality• Managing on-site health and safety• Liaising with consultants and, where necessary, requesting further information (RFIs)• Writing up risk assessments

As part of my Masters, I prepared and submitted a dissertation entitled ‘the benefits, challenges and opportunities of using modern methods of construction (MMC) in conjunction with BIM for building better homes’. This work was carried out in collaboration with CALA Homes over a 4 month period. The research project involved an extensive literature review, gathering qualitative and quantitative data using an eSurvey questionnaire aimed at construction and house building professionals and, a series of semi-structured interviews with selected experts identified from the survey. Despite the relatively short time period over which the research was undertaken, the work successfully helped to provide house builders with an in depth understanding of the potential benefits of MMC and BIM, and the factors that are important for its successful adoption. This should assist house builders in developing a business strategy for delivering high-quality, cost-effective, energy efficient new homes whilst reducing waste. I was awarded a distinction for this piece of work.

Food and Beverage team member. I had the responsibility of bartending and waitering in both the hotel's main bar and Sky Bar which was situated in the centre of Edinburgh. This often involved working during very busy times at the hotel during weddings and commercial events. This role helped me develop excellent interpersonal and communication skills, interacting with staff and customers, and remaining polite and focused at all times. Often, I was assigned the role of supervisor, which allowed me to improve my leadership skills by coordinating bar duties and, if necessary, dealing with any customer complaints.

In my final two years at High School, I took part in the Careers Ready Scheme. This gave me a tremendous opportunity to develop a variety of personal skills, such as planning and time management, and presentation and writing skills. As part of the scheme I was assigned a mentor from BP to help with my development. This included a 6-week summer placement at BP in Aberdeen with the Subsea and Pipelines Team. During this time, I developed a much deeper appreciation of the oil and gas business by shadowing fully qualified engineers, visiting construction sites and manufactureres, and taking part in meetings, all of which, helped improve my personal skills.
