Iris Rivera is a bilingual (English and Spanish) Mental Health Counselor, currently holding a limited license in NY state. Iris practices from a Person-centered approach which functions from the belief that the client is intrinsically driven toward and has the capacity for growth and self-actualization; this internal force produces therapeutic change. Iris believes her role in treatment provides a nonjudgmental environment helpful to honest self-exploration. Iris’ approach to mental health treatment also utilizes a social justice lens. Iris acknowledges that biology and environment influence how humans process their individual experiences. Iris considers that part of our environmental experiences often includes issues resulting from racism, Immigration laws, Social Economic status, Age, Gender, and Sexuality. She believes the effects of intersectionality, marginalization, and daily interactions with oppressive systems often exasperate Mental health conditions. Iris has experience applying techniques from Cognitive-behavioral therapy, Dialectical-behavioral therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing Therapy.
