Mission Systems Engineer I
Satellite Operations Engineer - Mission Planning Systems
My time at DigitalGlobe had come full circle. I went from being user of the planning systems as a Mission Planner to finally becoming the man behind the curtain. Using all of my skills and knowledge combined with the power bestowed on me, I was finally able to start dialing in a better and more efficient planning system. During my time, I continued to grow my engineering experience both on a technical and interpersonal level, collaborating with different teams and visions to find ways to make the machine of Satellite Operations work as best as we could make it. I began to build a reputation of true out-of-the-box thinking and as my skills grew I moved those ideas that resided in the adjacent-possible into the realm of possibility. From there I was able to guide other Engineers to the solution and I would move onto the next idea. There was definitely some rough patches of my own growth to work through on the way, but by the end of my year and a half tenure as an Operations Engineer, I was able to walk away with my head high knowing that I had accomplished everything that I could. And this marks the end of my time with DigitalGlobe. It was an honor to work with so many talented and loving people for a mission that was committed to seeing a better world.Achievements:15% increase YTD in daily sq. km. collected from the constellation from tuning.Reduced costs from antenna providers by shaving off unnecessary time.Coordinated with other Engineering teams to put new tools in place in order to reduce impact of system downtime to the mission.Advocated for the professional development of operators to bring their realm of expertise into the development process.
Operations Support Engineer
As an Operations Support Engineer I became an essential part of the operations center by being a jack of all trades and master of none. Moving from Mission Planning where the role was very clear-cut and defined to the OSE role was a massive shift. My responsibilities became nebulous and I was expected to "fix things and do stuff." What this actually meant was that I had to further my knowledge of the production system, the mission planning systems, the mission control system, systems architecture, network infrastructure as well as the "NEW" cloud-based versions of each of these as well as a healthy amount of knowledge on the capabilities of each spacecraft. This all tied together by learning what could and could not be accomplished so we can balance risk and reward when dealing with tens of thousands of dollars worth of imagery at any given moment. A single mistake meant the loss of that revenue, but without our intervention it would have been lost anyway and so our actions would be condoned by management. This mindset allowed us to experiment and come up with different ways to do things if our normal procedures were unable to resolve the problem. It was the ultimate cowboy-ops position and I loved it. Our management chain was separate from the other positions in the room and our boss was one of the best I've ever had. We were given the freedom to work on self-assigned projects and trusted with access to critical components of the MOC, all while being groomed for day-staff oriented positions as they became available. Officially, the OSE position was Tier 1/2 support for various systems within the Mission Operations Center relying heavily on Linux and coding skills (primarily Ruby) to resolve emergencies in the place of on-call day staff to the best of our ability and to inefficiencies within the entire end-to-end system itself, all while working a fairly grueling rotating shift schedule. 10/10 - Would pull 18-hour shifts again fueled by panic and Redbull.
Mission Planner
As a Mission Planner in DigitalGlobe I have been able to combine all of my previous academic, personal and professional skills to become successful at my position. The job continues to be challenging enough to keep me engaged but allows me to continue to build my own repertoire of skills. I coordinate with many other teams in order to ensure successful collection of new images from our constellation of high resolution imagery satellites. Working with these teams has opened up new doors and opportunities to learn more about the vast array of systems used throughout the world for DigitalGlobe to be the leader in satellite imagery that it is today. From the top down the leadership encourages and push the workers to continue their own education and to explore different areas within the company. I work with some of the best people I've ever met and I can confidently say that I love my job.
Engineering Intern
Up to this point, all of my work experience has been focused more on soft skills rather than technical aptitude. At Air Methods I began work as an intern I was able to see first hand what it was like working in a technical position. After my initial internship term I continued to work in Air Methods and expanded my ability of project-based work and learned different facets of the professional SolidWorks suite with an emphasis on Enterprise Data Management.I was able to learn and apply basic VBA coding within the EPDM environment in order to generate much needed reports. With my project I was able to accurately and quickly compile FAA required reports for different aircraft so as to free up some time for the staff engineers. After I had graduated I remained an intern as upper management had removed a Mechanical Engineer position that I had my eye on and the 60+ mile drive no longer became feasible. Regardless, I greatly enjoyed my time at Air Methods and I continue to wish them the best.
Gscc Intern
After Best Buy I focused mainly on my studies at university. During the summer interim I was offered an intern position at Jeppesen. Here I began to cut my teeth in a more corporate environment rather than in a retail position. I honed my skills of interpersonal communication by directly assisting customers with various Jeppesen-based products as well as learning how to manage an individual project within a large company. Along with these, I met some great people and learned about their experiences and professional choices in order to plan my own career path.
Sales Associate
For a time I worked concurrently with AMC Theaters and Best Buy. While with Best Buy, I learned the value of guided training as I was taught a very basic skill: How to sell. Selling went from being a dirty word to a challenge of personal growth as I was taught to combine product knowledge, interpersonal skills and sales tactics in order to assist customers in finding the best solution for their technological needs. I also gained experience in inventory management and teamwork in my tenure. Unfortunately, the store had to close due to cost cutting.
Floor Staff
AMC theaters turned me from a timid boy into an out-going and courteous worker. Here I learned basic working skills such as timeliness and service to a company as well as time management and multitasking. Looking back, the most valuable skill I learned was simply how to talk to people along with conquering my fear of public speaking by introducing movies to the audience members. A fantastic start to my professional life, but I eventually had to leave for greener pastures.
