Hired as full time Sr. Engineer reporting directly to CTO. Essentially brought on board to continue the UMG consultancy role described below but also to assist the segue towards an Ingrooves owned digital supply chain SaaS solution and assist in the data architecture for such system. During this time I took over several DBA responsibilities for UAT/QA and several production boxes not already under HP management. Also worked closely with HP to architect an acceptable best practices and disaster recovery procedure to suit our specific demands. During the design phase of the Zeus project (the DSC product) I was instrumental in SSIS/ETL tasks, integration of complex changes for UMG global projects to replace legacy systems, and implementation of data design including CDC for history and data mining projects. Development adopted the agile scrum SDLC model so I became familiar with this method including daily accountability, planning poker, user stories and hitting out incremental roll-out goals. Replication projects, optimization and tuning, T-SQL development including some light C# dev for CLR-functions and utilization in SSIS script components to do such things as access the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to leverage performance monitoring data.

Senior Consultant for the Digital Initiatives Division of Universal Music Group (UMG) and Ingrooves(ING). Primary responsibilities were that of a development and ETL DBA. A complete Microsoft environment. The application I helped support here is responsible for aggregating order and fulfillment data for the delivery of digital media to consumers such as Apple and Amazon.com among others. System operates on the edge of both OLTP and OLAP with several incoming and outgoing feeds and require a mastery of locking strategies, proper indexing, the nature of transactions, sql internals and best practices in T-SQL. Have been able to solve several major performance issues with both classic and original approaches.My biggest contribution to the new system was to develop from scratch a real time ETL type code base that simulates SQL’s replication engine but only moves data between system stores once the data changes are conceptually complete based on business logic. This surgical approach was favored over the brute force of replication since the failure points were reduced and several asynchronous processes could always be running as migrated data was always process ready. The solution includes SSIS, TSQL and VB.NET scripting. Intelligent error handling and process isolation were key benefits that the architecture while allowing UMG to stage data from 15 different upstream data repositories to generate an independent “catalog” database comprising the company’s asset profileThe solution’s success opened the door for several long term projects and the smoothness of the roll-out and “out-of-the-box” performance metrics were a very gratifying outcome. During this specific project I became very familiar with various strengths and weaknesses/oddities of 2008 SSIS distributed transactions, CDC (Change Data Capture) and various additions to T-SQL and new DMV (Data Management Views).

Full time employee of the Studio IT division of Disney converted from 9 months as contractor. Performed all the duties of a Sr. SQL Server DBA and SQL programmer for the length of my tenure as the lone database pro. The project was a highly customizable and diverse web-based media asset management application (MAM system) proprietary to Disney. I came on board during its infancy. It grew into a shared solution that acted both as an internal asset/project management tool and a b2b digital asset delivery. The system had over 1000 store procedures and 600 tables with several tables exceeding 10 million rows at my departure.On more than one occasion I rebuilt data manipulation projects from the ground up in days to receive performance improvements to the nth degree. For example, one process that was written to clone existing massive data structures for similar titles was running as a batch job in the evenings and taking on average 12 hours to complete due to inadequate design and adherence to the hierarchical logical design thus creating unnecessary resource locks and large transactions. My redesign took advantage of an alternate view to how the data was related and the exact same collections of data can be cloned in literally one to two minutes during production hours. During staff ramp-ups for major development efforts I had been lead DBA and mentored 3 SQL programmers simultaneously.The most visible development was a complete search and security module. All security across many tiers (user level, role level, department level, url level, item workflow, etc.) , around 250 independent and interdependent checks per user session, are all verified and maintained real-time at the database level. The original search was cumbersome to use and slow to yield results. The new system has increased the time from request submission to receipt of initial results by 500%.
