About Jared Harding

Success stories and challenges in life: Jared was born in Durban, South Africa and his family relocated to Port Elizabeth in 1990.Jared started his schooling career at Cape Recife High school where his biggest challenge in life was him being able to speak as he only started speaking at the age of 4 years. He and his parents were advised that he would have to possibly learn sign language and wow, they were wrong as now he can’t keep quiet.During his schooling, Jared became a volunteer for Bayworld, Port Elizabeth Oceanurium where he started off as just a basic volunteer who scrubbed the pools. When he left in 2004, he was able to handle all the dolphins, seals, turtles, sharks, penguins and many other animals unsupervised. After school, Jared was accepted as the first South African to attend an international internship for the international Bird Rescue Research Center which is based in California, USA. Jared was one of their best interns as he always wanted to learn and he proved to be a hard and dedicated intern..He then worked for Animal Welfare Society, as operational Animal Supervisor and then moved on to Ajubutus, Marine and wildlife Rescue Center as Penguin curator. In 2009, Jared returned from Marion Island as he was a Field Assistant for Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism under the old Marine Coastal management. This was one of the biggest challenges in life, as this is a remote island where you learn to defend yourselves and to work as teams because that’s all you have. It was an amazing 13 months with 16 team members. On his return to South Africa, Jared started as Animal manager of SAMREC, SA Marine Rehabilitation and education center and loves every moment. Especially when they release animals back into the wild. One of the things that I, Jared, believe in, is the Motto of the Scout Movement which is “Be PREPARED “as life is full of challenges.

Listed skills include Leadership, Fundraising, Management, Wildlife, and 25 others.

It was an awesome experience in my life.. I was welcomed by all staff and volunteers with open arms! Background information:When International Bird Rescue began going out into the world to respond to oil spills, we started to meet amazing, wonderful people. Many of them wanted to know where they could go to get the training that our oil spill response team had, as those resources were not available to them. Recognizing how desperate they were for this experience, I invited anyone who wanted to learn about aquatic bird rehabilitation to visit one of our California rehabilitation facilities.Immersing yourself in a rehabilitation setting is the only way you can learn these skills and get a sense of what is needed to do this type of work. Thus, our International Internship Program was born simply because there was a need for it. Since its official inception in 2000, we have had over 75 interns representing 14 countries. They are now part of our international response team, and many of them stay in touch with us and respond to oil spills and other emergencies with us when needed.Jared Harding of South Africa is one of our past interns who took his internship experience and went on to help penguins and other wild animals in his country.
