I helped people rebuild their lives after being taken advantage of by people involved in the financial services industry. Most of the time, the "bad guys" are brokers or investment advisers who convince their clients to invest their lives' savings in a "guaranteed, can't lose" program that is eventually uncovered as a fraudulent Ponzi scheme. Other times, the bad guy is a broker with a habit of placing his long-retired clients into speculative investments that do nothing for the client, but earn a nice commission for the broker. Sometimes the investment adviser skims some money from his client's investment before placing it with the fund. Every day was different.The office researches and investigates clients' investments for possible violations of the securities laws, and, if a violation is found, brings claims against the schemer and any other person (or company) that assisted the schemer with his or her scheme.

FINRA's Department of Enforcement disciplines brokers, member firms, and other registered representatives that violate the securities laws or FINRA's internal regulations. Issues range from minor rule violations (e.g. filing late registration amendments) to Ponzi schemes and other major frauds. I assisted the Department of Enforcement by drafting and editing pre-hearing briefs, dispositive motions, Office of Disciplinary Affairs memoranda, letters of acceptance, waiver, and consent (similar to a settlement agreement), and other assorted internal memoranda. I also conducted extensive research within FINRA’s discrete body of case law, as well as the broader Federal Securities Laws and Regulations, to determine a representative's potential liability and appropriate sanction (e.g. disqualification, suspension, fines, restitution, or disgorgement of commissions).
