Policy Analyst in the Fire and Emergency Policy Team. Key tasks involved: Developing policy for reforming the Fire Service and its funding. Developing policy for the funding of the Fire Service involved analysing financial information, particularly insurance practices and accounting, and undertaking extensive research of international best practices.Leading the Department’s input into the National Rural Fire Authority’s Enlarged Rural Fire Districts Strategy, including presenting the government’s perspective to rural fire stakeholder groups. I was the lead contact for much of this work and often represented the Department of Internal Affairs at meetings with local stakeholders to discuss the plans and how each area would be effected. Preparing briefings for the Minister of Internal Affairs and other Ministers. This requires a very high level of written communication skills, and strong attention to detail. Writing guideline documents for the rural fire sector. These guideline documents required a detailed knowledge of a wide range of legislation to ensure that the information provided to the sector was accurate.Writing speeches for delivery by Ministers and Members of Parliament.Assisting with civil defence emergency management tasks, including working in the bunker during the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury Earthquakes. Preparing Cabinet papers.Peer reviewing other analysts’ work.
