Senior Software Engineer
- Created a new release deployment mechanism, reducing necessary developer effort and cost by more than an order of magnitude and improving reliability.- Converted error monitoring and detection from visual scans of log files to a sophisticated collection of automated alerts, monitors, and graphs.- Led the team in improving automated testing throughout the cycle of unit, integration, and system testing, substantially increasing code coverage and furthering dependability.- Introduced practices to improve team dynamics and efficiency involving planning, PR change request organizations, and code reviews.- Guided the team through multiple large-scale changes to get dependencies up to date and make the code and related processes manageable.- Completed an overhaul of numerous, large configuration files to reduce maintenance complexity by an order of magnitude.- Performed a multi-year effort to improve the object structure and convert the Guice injection behavior into an efficient, useable system. As an experienced senior software developer I contributed key improvements to the complex established Payment Intelligence Engine, a core piece of the BillGO payment processing engine. Many of my most significant efforts involved improving developer productivity and reducing costs. On joining the team, I recognized that a lot of effort was being wasted in the release of the next version. I identified a new approach, sketched out the major elements, and over multiple months implemented all of the pieces. This resulted in dramatic savings in developer time, increased happiness among the team, and management, and more frequent, manageable releases.Separately, I also identified major structural problems with the core of the code, which made it difficult to test and improve. Incrementally, over several years, I selected the next step along the path I had outlined, achieving major improvements in multiple areas.
Senior Software Engineer
- Redesigned user database to eliminate long-standing security issues automatically on upgrade with no reported failures.- Improved distributed agent launch mechanisms for additional scenarios along with documentation to describe new and existing mechanisms.- Analyzed and corrected multi-platform symlink vulnerabilities and race condition, while significantly improving performance.- Innovated new build and release approach, shifting left on approval steps and simplifying release day operations.- Mentored students in Google Summer of Code and Outreachy. At CloudBees I fixed and improved critical pieces of the Jenkins open-source software system. As a member of the Core and CERT (security) teams I analyzed, corrected, and helped other contributors across wide swathes of the huge ecosystem.I maintained the Jenkins Remoting project, which is a key component for deploying a robust, secure, distributed Jenkins system. This library provides the mechanisms for communication between the controller server and remote agents that can run on a variety of platforms. I corrected long-standing deadlocks and security issues, created new launching mechanisms requested by users, and reworked central logic for improved reliability. The Jenkins project participates in Google Summer of Code and Outreachy to provide internship experiences to college students from around the world. I mentored on several of these projects, assisting students to contribute to components of the Jenkins ecosystem and have a successful job experience.
Principal Software Engineer
- Created RESTful services for managing credentials, protocols, and other network connection information. Implemented this in a very componentized, microservices fashion for maximum flexibility with different configurable, back-end persistent storage mechanisms.- Implemented fast, efficient scanner component to discover IP devices on a network using a variety of protocols and mechanisms. Scanned 65,000 IP addresses in 8 hours.- Led effort to introduce a new NO-SQL Datomic database for storing complex topology data, iterating through improved understandings of best practices and designs. Released initial version to customers after only 9 months when previous attempt had failed after 4 years of development.- Collaborated with teams to develop a centralized server component for aggregating device and topology data from diverse, highly distributed reporting agents.- Constructed mechanisms and patterns for efficient unit and integration testing, maintaining over 90% code coverage from over 8000 automated tests.- Assisted support and field teams in understanding and resolving complex customer scenarios and problems. As a primary / lead developer building CA's Unified Infrastructure Management, I have led and contributed to various new capabilities and improvements. UIM is a massively distributed network, system, and service management tool used by companies around the world. My focus has been on key data aggregation components on the primary server. Complex issues I've handled include piecing together consistent results from highly distributed agents, database schema definition and management, performance analysis and improvement, and resource consumption trade-offs.The development and build of the UIM system is also a complex, distributed endeavor, which I have improved in these areas, to make it easier for our team to develop and support it. Going from no automated tests, under my leadership our team now maintains thousands with more added all of the time.
Principal Software Engineer
Windchill Team:- Ported a complex applet to a new version of Java and Windchill, fixing numerous errors and severely flawed code structure. Prepared component for general release in one year after others had worked on it for many years.- Created an efficient development environment for working remotely from the main project team. Reduced time costs associated with working remotely by a factor of 10.SharePoint Platform Team:- Ensured that the SharePoint Platform Team followed correct SharePoint and .NET security practices through understanding the intricate details involved in installing and securing the farm. Fixed numerous security errors, clarifying and simplifying the approach. - Analyzed changes to SharePoint database during various operations in order to implement two-stage transactional wrapper with rollback for SharePoint data and external proprietary data. Simplified and solidified the approach, preparing it for general, initial release to customers. At PTC, I made significant contributions on two different project teams, working primarily on complex, back-end server capabilities. On the Windchill team, I took a legacy Java applet that had been passed as a side-project from person to person, restructured it for maintainability, and prepared it for general release. As part of the SharePoint Platform Team, I wrote advanced back-end integrations to manage custom data for products built on top of MS SharePoint. I established expertise in the SharePoint security, data, and transaction models and how SharePoint scales to large farms. This work was heavily involved with C#, .NET, VisualStudio, SQL Server, and other components of the Microsoft stack.
Senior Software Engineer
Model Manager Team:- Ported the server persistence layer onto the Microsoft SQL Server database server, alongside the existing Oracle implementation. Added Common Table Expression (CTE) queries to dramatically improve performance of tree queries.- Revamped the C kernel to correctly handle internationalized character sets.- Created a database logging utility to manage our hundreds of thousands of daily automated test results.OneSpace.net Team:- Implemented a web-based project and document workspace.- Constructed a WebDAV interface for the server.- Enthusiastically adopted agile programming practices.OneSpace Team:- Led the team that created a shared whiteboard for real-time collaboration after first identifying the customer and business need and proposing the solution.- Implemented a reliable shared notes feature for collaborating around CAD data.- Fixed major performance problems with a 3D CAD collaborative annotation feature. While at CoCreate, I contributed on three different client-server products, implementing capabilities on the front and back ends. These projects used different technologies, including some emerging and some legacy ones.On the Model Manager team, I worked in Java, C, Lisp, and custom programming languages. Using different pairs of client - server platform configurations, we ran up to 400,000 automated test instances a day. When I determined we had to better manage the flood of results, I created a simple database backend, which reduced the analysis and fix overhead dramatically. As part of the OneSpace.net team, I fashioned Web UIs, web services, and backend services using C#, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, WebDAV, and other portions of the Microsoft Stack. My work on the OneSpace team involved creating real-time client and server side applications for collaborating over CAD models and plans. This work involved Java, for both services and fat-client GUIs, along with custom and standard networking capabilities.
