Manage the day-to-day operations of Kwithu Kitchen (KK), a women-owned food processing cooperative operating from Mzuzu, in Northern Malawi. Kwithu Kitchen is the country's largest honey processor and supplier. KK also produces tomato puree, chopped tomatoes, tomato sauce (ketchup), hot chili sauce, tomato jam, dried mango and will soon be introducing other products. Kwithu Kitchen's products are found in all of the country's major supermarket and hotel chains. Kwithu Kitchen had the honor of hosting Malawi's President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, on March 15, 2024.

Support the US-based Executive Director and Malawi-based CEO to manage the day-to-day operations. Act as chief financial officer, prepare annual budgets, manage external audit, and report to management and the board on all financial matters. Upgrade and improve financial management processes, program impact reporting, and external communications (through website, social media and newsletters). Maloto supports three independent Malawian organizations (Mzuzu International Academy, Kwithu Women’s Group, and Kwithu Kitchen). Managed the day-to-day affairs of the organization, with 65 staff in three countries. Led the agency’s operational functions: finance and budget, grant management and reporting, strategic and annual planning, legal, human resources, IT, and administration. Responsible for all efforts to integrate these functions across departments and across the NY, India and Ghana program sites. Assisted the CEO to develop, communicate, execute and sustain strategic initiatives and worked closely with the executive team to ensure integration of these requirements across the organization.Responsible for creating new systems to manage growth, including donor reporting and compliance requirements. Annual budget doubled during tenure to $ 8 million. Interacted regularly with the Board of Directors on all matters of substance. Led annual audit process and presented findings to Board’s Executive Committee.

Promoted to unify and lead the IRC’s domestic and international programs, bringing together two separate departments under single line management authority. Mobilized the financial, human and organizational resources necessary to meet refugee and beneficiary needs. Managed the combined program unit’s budget of more than $ 350 million, 10,000+ staff, and offices and programs in over 40 countries around the world and in more than 20 cities in the United States. Supervised three vice presidents (US Programs, International Programs and Program Quality) and the Business Development Unit. Maximized efficient use of existing financial and human resources, and sourced additional funding and talent when necessary, to increase the IRC’s field capacity in external relations and communications, human resources, information technology, advocacy, safety and security, business development, program technical support, and emergency response.Led strategic planning process for programs, and was one of the four-member IRC Senior Management Strategic Plan Core Team. Developed and managed inter-departmental processes to ensure strong and positive HQ-Field relations.Engaged key Board of Directors members on domestic and international programming trends, and secured support for new programmatic directions consistent with the IRC’s mission and history. Participated in Board committee meetings, including Program, Finance, Audit, Health, and Safety and Security. Managed critical aspects of IRC – IRC UK relationship to ensure coherence and alignment.Raised the profile of the IRC through ensuring high quality programs, encouraging staff to tell the IRC’s moving story internally and externally, and making strategic investments in research and evaluation and partnerships to enable the IRC to become an increasingly global organization.

Promoted to Senior Vice President in July 2008, due to the tremendous success and growth of the International Programs Department. Led the IRC’s $ 200 million international emergency and development programs operating in over 40 countries. Managed over 60 headquarters-based staff, and over 350 international staff and 7,000 national staff based in the field. Developed the long-term vision and direction of the IRC’s largest division. Led the strategic planning process. Key member of the agency-wide senior management team. Created positive and productive working relationships with the vice presidents of major support departments – human resources, finance, development, external relations, and government relations and advocacy. Managed strategically important relationships with select foundation and major donors, as well as with key members of the board of directors. Represented the IRC at senior-level meetings, conferences, and other fora with donors and representatives of government agencies, corporate funders and the United Nations.

Led the development of a new vision for international programs and then implemented that vision, which resulted in a more relevant programming portfolio. Portfolio grew from $100 million budget in 2003 to $180 million dollar budget in 2008. Developed the necessary programmatic and operational infrastructure to manage and sustain this dramatic funding growth. Successfully led the conscious organizational effort to increase funding from competitive calls for proposals from U.S. government agencies, including (USAID, its Office of Transition Initiatives, the Department of Labor, and the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. Dramatically increased attention to program quality by doubling the amount of private resources allocated to the International Programs ‘Technical Units’ (Health, Children, Economic Recovery, Governance and Rights, Emergency, and Post-Conflict Development). Promoted the internationalization of the agency by supporting the IRC UK affiliate as a member of the IRC Global Network.
