Profile bio

About Jon Obermeyer

I.I'm semi-retired and living in Hawaii, devoted to my own writing, helping others publish their own books, and advising several non-profits, including an entrepreneurship center here on Oahu and supporting projects in the Philippines (a boys/girls home, a K-12 school and a maternity hospital construction project in an impoverished neighborhood in Cainta, Rizal, in the Manila). I've independently published over 30 books of my work on Amazon, using the Print-on-Demand model. My creative work (poetry, short stories, essays) is published in literary journals, but I'm still writing outside the traditional publishing world, which is fine with me. I also publish writing guides, and how-to books for grant writing and non-profit formation and growth. In my 20 years of grant writing, I have led or supported close to $100 million in grant awards, through private foundations, corporations, and government agencies (successful grants written for US Dept of Labor, Health & Human Services, and USDA). I'm happy to help a brand new non-profit figure out grant funding, or help someone else break into the field of grant writing.II. Communications has defined my career. The ability to articulate a clear, concise and compelling summary on a variety of topics, or across a number of industry use cases, is my greatest talent. I'm that rare writer with P&L experience, plus marketing, business development and deep project management chops. A technology executive once said of me "Jon not only connects the dots, he connects dots no one else knows are there."I write, edit and coach business books, blogs, ebooks, social posts and video scripts, headlines and subject lines. I pair well with a digital "full stack marketer" who is quant-savvy, metrics-driven, or a CEO/CMO who wants to run wide open.III.My commercial writing is built on broad executive experience:10 years CEO, GM, VP and director level leadership experience: CEO of a seed fund and owner of an operating company. 16 years marketing and communications experience, supporting B2B and B2C global sales teams, strategic partnerships and customer acquisition14 years Financial Services experience in retail banking and seed funding.I've written for Samsung, SanDisk, Micron, Hearst Media, Authentic Vision, RF Micro Devices, Partech and DemandBase. My writing covers AI, software/SaaS, tech products (b2b, b2c), nanotechnology, medical devices, regenerative medicine, entertainment, tourism, professional services, supply chain, consumer durables, and venture philanthropy. I'm happy to tackle any topic.

Listed skills include Strategy, Business Development, Start Ups, Product Marketing, and 42 others.

Grants Manager At Project Open Hand

San Francisco Bay Area

Responsible for submitting roughly $1.5 million per year in corporate and private foundation grant proposals leading to $4 million in funding awards since 2020. In FY 21, we exceeded our Corporate and Foundation funding goal by 30%. I support health plan certifications and government contract RFP's (we were recently awarded $13 million in San Francisco for a four-year contract to serve congregate meals to older adults and adults with disabilities). I also led efforts for $750k in federal funding for a Health & Human Services - Administration in Community Living pilot project grant to support innovation in addressing food insecurity and isolation among seniors in both urban and rural settings. As you may know, grant writing involves minimal writing per se; it's mostly project management. But occasionally, my narrative skills do come into play. POH is a 36-year-old org with an incredible "Food is Love" mission, based in SF's Tenderloin neighborhood. I joined right at the onset of Covid-19, produced 3 proposals my first week, and over 20 proposals in my first 90 days, most of them successful due to Open Hand's incredible track record and reputation in SF and Oakland.

Did you like the supergroup The Travelling Wilburys?I can't recall any of their songs, but the idea of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and that ELO guy Jeff Lynne on the same stage is an astounding. Steely Dan did the same thing assembling most of Toto in the studio, along with Rick Derringer, Jeff Baxter, Victor Feldman, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenhour, Wayne Shorter, Tom Scott and Joe Sample.Well, Muddy Gecko is kind of like that, but with marketing pros and not musicians. We've already been helping out companies like Micron, Nortek and Gluware with Marketing gaps, marketing overflow and fractional (metered) marketing services. Our team of 30 has previously worked in Technology, Healthcare, Consumer Products and Energy, at places like Intel and VMware, running brand strategy and producing videos for Apple and Mercedes Benz. I started out with MG as a writer, a word wizard on all things content - blogs, copy, white papers, ebooks, decks, press release, full-length feature books, video scripts, (B2B and B2C).I'm so sold on the concept, I've recruited three writer friends to backfill, so that I can help Muddy Gecko develop the Raleigh-Durham market, one of 25 cities/regions we will cover in 2018, from a scratch start in January, all self-funded growth. If you could add a full-stack marketing department to your company tomorrow, you’d consider it, right? What if you could leverage your industry knowledge with strategic planning, social media, SEO, video, content and design, the same way you scale up your Amazon or Azure Cloud? What if I could ship you:Graphic designers from Intel, Apple, and Cisco.Video Producers from Pepsi, Microsoft, and Mercedes Benz.Communications teams from Micron, Autodesk, and SanDisk.Muddy Gecko has built a network of the brilliant marketing freelancers and fractional marketing executive talent. As a lean start-up, Gecko's low overhead translates to lower mark-ups and lower fees. Let’s get started.

I've edited, ghostwritten, or co-authored 17 thought leadership books since 2018, on topics like: M&A, Agile Development, Cloud Computing, AI Product Development, Autonomous Software Testing, Project Management, Social Selling, Angel Investing and the Human Immune System. I basically cover the waterfront, and my methodology involves a 4-6 month sprint to publication, unless a trade publisher is involved (timeline is out of our hands). I am also a grant writer and have raised over $10 million for my clients in the social services sector. I also have experience on over $2 million in proposals, that resulted in runner-up status for federal Dept. of Education and Dept. of Commerce (NSF peer reviewed). Additionally, I have extensive private foundation grant writing experience for entrepreneurship, economic development and arts funding.Grant consultant for $2 million U.S. Dept of Education "Title III" strengthening Institution Program (SIP)Award pendingProject Scope: 50-page narrative, five-year budget and development of Logic ModelClient: Barton College, Wilson, NC

PuzzleMe is an HTML-5 based online gaming, retention and revenue platform for crosswords, with native, pre-roll ad and sponsorship functionality . It offers ways for a constructor to upload puzzles, manages the publication cycle, has a simple, mobile-friendly UX, and provides detailed analytics. It can be integrated into your site with an iframe, but can also communicate with the container page as needed -- e.g., to hook into advertising, pre-rolls, etc. The visual L&F, and interaction can be customized per your requirements, and we'd like to make the puzzle appear like a native part of your site. PuzzleMe is now the exclusive crossword platform for The Washington Post . One of the reasons the Post chose us to replace their existing page with Arkadium was to get a bespoke crossword experience that they fully control, rather than a generic games site. And I think all our customers will attest that we provide great support and responsiveness.
