As a Marine, I underwent constant classroom and field-environment training that encompassed being a leader and a follower, team problem solving, fast-pace decisive leadership, professional mentoring, and electrical maintenance experience. I learned how to step up and be a strong leader or step back and be a good follower. The emphasis was always on team dynamics and working together to accomplish our assigned task. When in higher stress environments, I learned to assess situations with competing priorities and decisively determine which things needed to be completed first. I also learned how to accept mentoring and how to mentor, teach and guide others. Lastly, I gained a lot of experience in the field of electronics maintenance. This dealt with soldering electrical components, trouble-shooting broken systems (such as satellite communications terminals), and managing a team of 15 Marines to ensure we kept our unit’s communications assets at their highest possible readiness.
