thredUP in the world's largest online secondhand marketplace. Unlike traditional retail, thredUP's marketplace is filled with millions of unique snowflake items so as head of merchandising, my role was anything but typical. I helped bring retail metrics, rigor and best practices to the emerging world of recommerce. It was an exercise of drawing from proven retail experience to actively ignoring some instincts as thredUP reshapes how America shops. -Traditional retail has inventory planners and a fairly predictable supply chain; conversely, thredUP's inventory comes from women's closets around the world. At thredUP I built a robust supplier segmentation framework and used this to drive a more holistic supply strategy - working with product development, brand and operations to improve the quality of supply, supplier satisfaction and more predictable supply flow rates.- Launched a wholesale business to fill gaps in inventory driving millions in incremental annual volume. Managed the P&L for this business channel which yielded above average unit economics.- Created a multi-level MECE (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive) hierarchy that is rigid enough for financial reporting and operations, but also flexible enough for marketing and merchandising. In addition, creating more manageable classifications around the 40K brands and labels available in the marketplace.- Balanced human intelligence with machine intelligence. I worked collaboratively with data science and operations on unit pricing and item acceptance to maximize sell thru and profit (from brands ranging from Gap to Gucci). Blending the art with the science of forecasting, data modeling, trend analysis and customer behavior.- Subject matter expert or stakeholder in a number of special projects including: aftermarket business, 2nd hand brand Remade, brick & mortar retail stores, resale report, and multiple marketing campaigns.
