As the Perianesthesia Health Unit Coordinator, I worked as a member of an interdisciplinary team of nurses, physicians, and colleagues. I investigated the nucleoside and nucleobase transporters in Trypanosoma cruzi. I focusedon the functional characterization of the four TcNTs, primarily by determining the ligand specificities and affinities for TcNT1, TcNT2, TcNT3, and TcNT4 and verifying their subcellular locations in intact parasites. I also mapped the chromosomal regions around the TcNT1 and TcNT2 loci, and used targeted gene replacement to knock-out TcNT genes. I also developed a non-radioactive Southern Blot protocol for our laboratory's useage, taking advantage of streptavidin-biotin conjugation.

Used transformation through electroporation to introduce insertionally inactivated genes into bacteria. Analyzed data using PCR, single and double restrictive enzyme digests, and BLAST programs, among other methods.
