About Katy Johnson

As a dedicated student and part-time writing tutor at Indiana University Kokomo, I've developed a deep love for education. I have grown up incredibly passionate about social justice and politics. Combining these passions, I intend to pursue a Master of Social Work (MSW) after completing my undergraduate English degree.After I complete my MSW I plan to work in the field of policy, lobbying, and advocacy.My accomplishments include: - Achieved an International Baccalaureate Diploma, an Academic Honors Diploma, and National Honor Society membership in high school- Elected and reelected Student Government Vice President/Senate President at IU Kokomo; Promoted to Student Body President- Founded and led the Film Society at IU Kokomo, a student-led organization for film analysis- Chosen for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Advisory Board at IU Kokomo- Recommended for and hired as a Peer Writing Tutor - Traveled with a group from IU Kokomo to Western Europe to tour World War II sites- Chancellor's List, 3 semesters; Dean's List, 3 semesters

I also worked with other YDPs to respond to and evaluate each child's behavior and needs.I started my experience as a YDP (Youth Development Professional) at the Boys and Girls Club through the AmeriCorps program and learned so much more about service and volunteer work. I developed more work skills than I thought possible at my age through the amazing program! Through the Boys and Girls Club of America, I have completed training in emotional safety, the basics of trauma, and trauma-informed practices. These trainings have deepened my understanding of and passion for mental health in children.
